About & credits

Torah: Word by Word presents the Torah and the Writings word by word — Hebrew, transliteration, root, gematria, a plain translation, and the classic commentaries — assembled from freely-licensed sources so it can be read by anyone, anywhere, at no cost.

The edition

Compiled by Asaf Fulks. Book design and layout by Yakira Shimoni Fulks. Published by The Forum Press, a Fulks Inc company.

About the compiler

Asaf Fulks

Asaf David Fulks — the compiler of Torah: Word by Word — is an attorney, entrepreneur, and educator who keeps a traditional Jewish home and studies Torah daily. He learns with Rabbi Aaron Berkowitz of Chabad of Huntington Beach and with Rabbi Yonasan Abrams of Chabad of Temecula, and this edition grew out of that study: a way to open the text one word at a time — the Hebrew, its translation, its numerical value, and its meaning.

He holds a B.A. in Computer Science from Denison University and a J.D., magna cum laude, from Taft Law School. A member of the California Bar who is also admitted in federal court and has appeared pro hac vice in Hawaii, he practices litigation and intellectual-property law. In 2005 he founded The OC Recording Company — an accredited recording studio and audio school — where, over two decades as a professional audio engineer and music producer, he has led thousands of sessions and taught and mentored hundreds of students. He is a U.S. patent holder and the author of “In the Studio: Audio Engineering and Music Production Techniques” and “Consensus Change Standards,” both published by The Forum Press.

He descends from a distinguished family of Jewish leaders and public servants — among them his great-grandfather, Rabbi Chacham Shalom Shimoni, a spiritual leader of Kurdish Jewry in Kurdistan and Jerusalem, and his grandfather Haviv Shimoni, a member of the Israeli Knesset.

This edition gathers the Hebrew text, a word-by-word gloss, the gematria of every word and verse, a plain English translation, and the classic commentaries into a single interlinear reading — offered free, and corrected in the open with the help of its readers. Book design and layout are by Yakira Shimoni Fulks.
