The kingdom assembles man by man — first at Ziklag, 'while he was yet shut up because of Saul the son of Kish': Benjaminites of Saul’s own brethren, who 'could use both the right hand and the left in slinging stones and in shooting arrows'; Gadites 'whose faces were like the faces of lions, and they were as swift as the roes upon the mountains,' who crossed the Jordan 'in the first month, when it had overflowed all its banks.' When David fears treachery, the spirit clothes Amasai: 'Yours are we, David, and on your side, you son of Jesse; peace, peace be to you... for your God helps you.' Then Hebron: the armed muster, tribe by tribe — Issachar’s men 'who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do' — all of whom 'came with a whole heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel.' Three days of eating and drinking, 'for there was joy in Israel.'

Rashi
when he was still hiding - Heb. עָצוּר, hiding.
Ralbag
'Now these are they who came to David to Ziklag,' etc. — David had fled to the land of the Philistines, to Achish, to escape from Saul, and Achish gave him Ziklag, as is related in the Book of Samuel (I Samuel 27:6); and there these mighty men came to him from Benjamin. This shows David's good fortune and the strength of Hashem's providence, blessed be He, over him.
Metzudat David
'while he was yet shut up' — while he was still hiding from Saul. 'and they were among the mighty men' — they were counted among the mighty men who helped bring victory in battle.
Metzudat Zion
Shut up (atzur) - Hidden and confined, as in "shut up in the court of the guard" (Jeremiah 33:1).
Malbim
‘while he was yet shut up because of Saul’ — meaning that they did not come at the time the men of Manasseh came to Ziklag (verse 20), when Saul had already died around that time; rather, they came before that, while David dwelt in Ziklag a year and four months (I Samuel 27), during which time he was restrained from returning to the land of Judah. ‘among the mighty men’ — they were counted among David’s mighty men, who helped him in his wars.

Armed with bows armed with a bow and with arrows and shooting in front of them and behind them. And they would even place stones on the bowstring and shoot. I personally saw many like these. of Saul’s brethren of Benjamin Since they were all descended from one man, from Benjamin, they are all called brethren, and in honor of David’s greatness, the Chronicler says, “of Saul’s brethren,” [saying] that even Saul’s brethren came to him while Saul was still living.
Metzudat David
'could use both the right hand and the left,' etc. — they had control of both hands, to shoot stones and arrows by means of the bow. 'of Saul's brethren' — of Saul's relatives, of the children of Benjamin.

to the stronghold of the desert to the strongholds of the desert where he hid from Saul, as it is written (I Sam. 23:24): “And they arose and went to Ziph before Saul, and David and his men were in the desert of Maon, in the plain,” and it is written (ibid. 24:1): “And David went up from there, and he stayed in the strongholds of En-Gedi.” and whose faces were [like] the faces of lions Their faces were frightful like lions. and as swift as gazelles on the mountains They were swift in their running, for it is customary for gazelles to run on the mountains when people hunt them.
Ralbag
'And of the Gadites there separated themselves to David to the stronghold in the wilderness,' etc. — meaning, while he was hiding in the strongholds in the wilderness of Maon, in the Arabah, to the south of Jeshimon, for it was there that he hid himself, as is stated in the Book of Samuel (I Samuel 23:24); and this was before he went to Ziklag.
Metzudat David
'there separated themselves' — they separated themselves from Saul's camp to go to David, to the stronghold in the wilderness where David was hiding. 'men trained for war' — trained to go out in an army to battle, and arrayed for war with a tsinnah, which is a kind of shield. 'whose faces were like the faces of lions' — they struck fear by their appearance, like a lion. 'and they were as swift as the roes' — they hastened to run like a deer racing swiftly over the mountains to escape the hunter.
Malbim
‘And of the Gadites’ — they came before the previously mentioned children of Benjamin. ‘there separated themselves’ — for they were commanders of armies, as is stated (verse 15), and they abandoned their troops to go out to David. ‘to the stronghold in the wilderness’ — at the time David dwelt in the strongholds, as stated in Samuel (I Samuel 23:14).

these were some of the sons of Gad as is written above (v. 8): “And some of the Gadites separated to David.” the smallest one a hundred The smallest of them could pursue a hundred. and the greatest a thousand And the greatest of them could pursue a thousand. This is an actualization of the verse (Lev. 26:8): “Five of you will pursue one hundred, and one hundred of you, etc.”
Ralbag
'He who was least was equal to a hundred, and the greatest to a thousand' - This too shows how greatly David prospered: that among these who were heads of the army, some were commanders of thousands, while the lesser among them were commanders of hundreds - and despite this, they agreed to go to David and hide with him, in order to be of help and benefit to him.
Metzudat David
'he who was least' — the weakest of them alone could chase a hundred, and the mightiest of them alone could chase a thousand.
Malbim
‘captains of the host’ — while they were still in their own homes [before joining David], they were already captains of the host.

These are the ones who crossed the Jordan in the first month in Nissan, when the snows had already melted. and they put all the valley-dwellers to flight to the east and to the west They crossed the Jordan and with their shields split all the depths of the water to the east and to the west and crossed on dry land. Some say that ויַּבְרִיחוּ אֶת כָּל הָעֲמָקִִים refers to the people dwelling in the valleys.
Ralbag
'When it had overflowed all its banks' - At that time the Jordan was very high, overflowing and passing over all its banks, both to the east and to the west; for it had banks on both these sides - one side of it lying to the east, and the other to the west. That is why it says (Joshua 13:5), 'beyond the Jordan eastward.' 'And they put to flight all those of the valleys, both toward the east, and toward the west' - Meaning, that wherever the riverbed was deep, they set bars across it, in order to cross over on them; and they did this both with the deep places on the east side and with those on the west side. Because the river was so wide, they could not lay a single bar all the way across it from one bank to the other; rather, they carried bars with them, and wherever the water was very deep, they set a bar in that deep spot whose two ends reached toward the east and west banks - and so they did until they had covered all the deep places.
Metzudat David
'when it had overflowed' — for at that season the waters increase from the melting snows, and because of this the Jordan was so full that the water spread over all its banks; and it counts as a great feat of strength to cross through deep, rushing water without being swept away by it. 'and they put to flight' — even though they were exhausted from crossing through the water, they nevertheless put to flight all the inhabitants of the valleys on this side and that, who had no strength to stand against them.
Metzudat Zion
Its banks (gedotav) - The banks of the stream.
Malbim
‘who went over’ — while they were still commanders of armies; for at that time, in the days of Saul, the Gadites were at war with the Hagrites, as stated above (5:10): they crossed the Jordan while the Jordan was overflowing all its banks. ‘and put to flight’ — all the Hagrites who were in the valley.

Rashi
And there came some of the sons of Benjamin and Judah up to the stronghold, to David to the stronghold where David was hiding from Saul. And they took David’s sister’s son with them, because the sons of Benjamin were concerned that David might think that the sons of Benjamin had come to bind him and deliver him into Saul’s hands. Therefore, they took Amasa with them to David, and also some of David’s kinsmen from the rest of Judah, as it is written, “some of the sons of Benjamin and Judah,” in order that David would see that they came with them in good faith, so that he should not suspect them of anything.
Malbim
‘And there came’ — while David was in the stronghold, some of the children of Benjamin came as well, and with them were some of the children of Judah, with Amasai at their head. As Rashi explains, they feared that David would suspect them, since they were of Saul’s own tribe, of having come to seize him and hand him over to Saul; so they brought with them Amasai, David’s own kinsman.

And David came out before them from the stronghold. my heart will be upon you as one My heart and your heart will be like one heart. but if you have come to betray me to my adversaries although there is no injustice in my hands for what have I done to Saul that he is stalking my soul to take it for nothing?
Metzudat David
'And David went out' — from the stronghold. 'my heart shall be knit to you,' etc. — meaning: may Hashem put it into my heart that my heart should be drawn to you, so that we become one people, loving one another. 'but if you have come to betray me' — since he saw among them some of Saul's own relatives, he was concerned about the matter, and said: if your coming here is to deceive me, so that I will not be on guard against you, and you intend to seize me and cause me distress for no reason — with no wrong in my hands, for I have done nothing evil to Saul — 'the God of our fathers look on it,' etc. — then may Hashem look upon the wrong done to me, and make the matter clear, so that the deceit is exposed, so that I will not listen to you to become one people with you.
Metzudat Zion
And give judgment (veyochach) - An expression of determining a matter, as in "the one whom Hashem has appointed" (Genesis 24).
Malbim
‘If you have come peaceably’ — David said this in the manner of a prayer, since he did not know whether they had come for his good or for his harm. He asked Hashem, who knows the secrets of the heart, to make the truth clear to him: if they had come in peace, to help him, may Hashem put love for them into David’s heart, so that his heart would be ready to unite with them; but if they had come to betray him — seeing that there is no wrong in his hands, may Hashem see it — may Hashem rebuke them and make the truth clear to him, so that he would be on guard against them. [‘Give judgment’ (yokhach) means to clarify the matter, as in (Genesis 31:42), ‘God has seen my affliction ... and gave judgment last night.’]

Rashi
And a spirit enwrapped Amasai - Heb. רוּחַ, talent, a will or desire, not a spirit of prophecy; i.e., this desire and will enwrapped him so that he sprang first to speak before the sons of Benjamin and Judah who came with him. A similar instance is (Jud. 11:29): “And a spirit of the Lord was upon Jephthah” and he said: To you, David You say, “Have you come to me in peace?” We have surely come to you in peace. and with you, O son of Jesse We wish to be with you and at your assistance. peace, peace to you and peace to your helper And you ask me to help you? We have surely come to help you, but you need not thank us because it is from the Lord, and that is the meaning of “for your God has helped you.” and David received them those sons of Benjamin and placed them at the head of his troop.
Ralbag
'Yours are we, David,' etc. - Meaning: we are yours, and here we have come to be with you. Peace, peace from us to those far and near who are yours, and peace also from us to your helpers - since we see that your God helps you, and His good hand is upon you.
Metzudat David
'Then the spirit clothed,' etc. — meaning, the desire came into his heart to speak on behalf of all of them. 'Yours are we, David' — meaning, we have come for your benefit and for your good. 'And on your side' — we wish to be with you and to help you. 'Peace, peace be to you' — meaning: do we not see that peace has been with you and with those who help you, and Saul's hand has not overtaken them? This is through the help of God and His providence. Why then would we come to you with deceit? And "peace, peace" is doubled, to emphasize this. 'Then David received them' — for he believed the words of Amasai, his sister's son. 'Captains of the band' — appointing them, too, to be chiefs over the troop.
Metzudat Zion
The spirit (veruach) - Meaning "will," as in "behold, I will put a spirit in him" (II Kings 19). The band (hagedud) - The military force.
Malbim
'Then the spirit clothed' [Amasai] — and this is what Amasai said: 'Is not the chief of the captains yours, David?' — meaning: Am I, who stand at the head of these captains and mighty men, not yours? For I am your kin and your own flesh. 'And on your side, you son of Jesse' — for Amasai was the son of Abigail, and I have already explained (above, 2:16) that Abigail was David's sister on their mother's side, not their father's: their mother was first married to Nahash and bore Abigail, and afterward married Jesse and bore David. So Amasai was not literally one of the sons of Jesse — rather, his mother's mother [his grandmother] was the wife of Jesse and the mother of David, and he was raised in that household; and since he was together with David, his mother's brother, he was reckoned as though he were a son of Jesse. And since I am of your father's house and your kin — peace! Do not fear, for there is peace for you and peace for your helper, since these men who have come are wholehearted, both toward you and toward your helper. 'For your God helps you' — one may say this happened after [David] cut off the corner of Saul's robe, when it became evident that Hashem's help accompanied David. (And in light of what has been said, the phrase 'chief of the captains' applies both to what precedes and to what follows: Amasai, chief of the captains, was saying, 'Chief of the captains — yours are we, David.')

'Of Manasseh also there fell away some to David,' etc. - It is already mentioned in the Book of Samuel (I Samuel 29) that Achish king of Gath brought David along to fight against Saul, but the lords of the Philistines did not agree to this, for they said that David would win back his master Saul's favor by presenting him the heads of those very men. Here it says that when the lords of the Philistines sent him away and he returned to Ziklag, mighty men of Manasseh fell away to him, and they helped David pursue the raiding band that had burned Ziklag with fire and had taken captive David's wives, and his men's wives and children. David pursued after them and overtook them, as is written in the Book of Samuel (chapter 30): he recovered all the captives, and brought back much spoil.
Metzudat David
'When he came' — when David came with the Philistines, as they went to fight against Saul. 'But they did not help them' — David did not actually help the Philistines in the war, for by the advice of the lords, they sent him back from the battle to return to his own place; for they said, "he will fall away to his master Saul, to the jeopardy of our heads" — meaning, by bringing our heads he will win his way back to Saul, since through this he will appease Saul into forgiving him for having rebelled against him — for he is going to war with cunning intent.
Metzudat Zion
Fell away (naflu) - An expression of leaning toward and drawing near, as in "you are falling away to the Chaldeans" (Jeremiah 33). Lords (sarnei) - An expression of dominion.
Malbim
'Of Manasseh also there fell away' — they joined David; this happened at the time he went with the Philistines as far as Aphek to battle against Saul, at the request of Achish king of Gath (I Samuel 28), but his men did not help the Philistines, since the lords of the Philistines sent him back to Ziklag, for they said, 'With what will this man make himself acceptable to his master, if not with the heads of these men?' And on his way back he encountered men of Manasseh who were going to help Saul against the Philistines, and they joined him.

against the troop of Amalekites when his wives were captured; it was at that time, for when he went to Ziklag when the chiefs of the Philistines sent him away and he came to Ziklag, they had already been captured.
Metzudat David
'And they helped David' — meaning, just as David helped himself, so too they helped him against the troop of Amalekites who had taken captive David's wives, his men, and their children, as is stated in I Samuel. 'And were captains' — when he pursued after Amalek, he appointed them officers over the army.
Malbim
'And they helped [him] against the troop' — the troop of Amalek, who had taken David's camp captive. 'And were captains in the host' — for afterward, when David returned at that time to Judah, he made them captains of the army over the men of Manasseh who [later] came to him at Hebron; and [Scripture now] specifies them.

For from day to day [men] came to David to help him The meaning is: What is the purpose of continuing to recount who came to him? The final analysis is that at all times people were coming to David. until it became a huge camp, like the camp of God The meaning is that David’s camp should not have been so large, but from God the camp was so large, because they came to him by the counsel of God. And that is the meaning of “like the camp of God.” A similar instance of this is (Gen. 32: 2): “the camp of God” of Jacob. We can also say that because of the magnitude of his armies, it was called “the camp of God.”
Metzudat David
'For from day to day' — it is as if to say, in sum, that on every single day men came to help him. 'Until there was a great host' — until they grew so numerous as to become a great host, "like the host of God" — meaning, exceedingly great; for this is the way of Scripture: when it wishes to describe something as very great, it attaches it to the word "God," as in "an exceedingly great city" (literally, "a great city to God") (Jonah 3:3).
Malbim
'For from day to day men came' — from the time David returned to the land of Judah [and] they made him king, men from the other tribes also kept coming and adding to his forces continually, as it says in II Samuel 3:1, 'And David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker,' and as I explained there.

The sons of Judah, bearing shield and spear, six thousand and eight hundred Do not wonder that the smallest number of all the [people from] the tribes that came to him were from Judah, because it was not necessary for anyone to come to him from Judah to crown him since the sons of Judah had already crowned him in Hebron. But the remaining tribes, who had been with Saul’s sons until now - had to come to Hebron to crown him. armed men of the army - Heb. חֲלוּצֵי צָבָא, those taken out of the people, and a similar case is found in חֲלוּצֵי צָבָא, of the Portion מַטּוֹת. Rashi
And of the sons of Benjamin, Saul’s brethren, etc. Do not wonder that only three thousand came to him, because “heretofore their majority kept the watch of the house of Saul,” to help them.
Ralbag
'And of the children of Benjamin, the brethren of Saul' - It says this because he, Saul, was of their tribe. 'For hitherto the greatest part of them had kept their allegiance to the house of Saul' - Meaning, that most of those who now came to make David king had, until then, been assigned to guard the kingdom of Saul - and nevertheless, they came willingly to make David king.
Metzudat David
'The brethren of Saul' — Saul's relatives. 'For hitherto' — up until that time, the majority of them still kept their loyalty to the house of Saul, to maintain the kingdom in their hands, and only a few of them came to David while he was still a fugitive from Saul; but after Ish-bosheth died, many more of them came as well.
Metzudat Zion
The greatest part (marbitam) - An expression of abundance, i.e., the majority.
Malbim
'For hitherto the greatest part of them' — most of them had served the kingdom of Saul as bodyguards to the king and guards of his household, and had remained loyal to him.

those who had an understanding of the times They knew how to give counsel appropriate to the incident; David had to take counsel on how to strengthen the kingdom against the sons of Saul. their chiefs were two hundred besides the rest. and all their brethren obeyed their word on their counsel.
Ralbag
'Men who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do' - It appears that these were wise men, men of understanding and counsel, who knew, from one occasion to the next, how to give sound advice as to what Israel should do at that moment, based on the events then unfolding, which carried within them some indication of what was to come. All of these agreed to make David king.
Metzudat David
'Men who had understanding of the times' — those skilled in fixing the seasons, to know what Israel ought to do; meaning, they fixed the new moons and intercalated the years — so said our Sages; or it means that they were skilled at determining the right times for matters of war and the like. 'The heads of them' — of these, their heads came, numbering two hundred, while all their brethren who remained in their own land acted in every matter according to their word — as if to say, it is as though all of them had come.
Malbim
'Men who had understanding of the times' — they knew how to give counsel on Israel's course of action according to the needs of the time. And our sages explained that they were expert in the calculation of the seasons and the constellations. 'The heads of them were two hundred' — I have already explained above (7:12) that the children of Issachar had two hundred officers over thousands, and it was they who came on behalf of the whole tribe to make David king.

wage war וְלַעֲדר, an expression of digging, like (Isa. 7:25): “And all the mountains that will be dug with a spade (בַּמַעְדֵּר יֵעָדֵרוּן),” and as a result, those who set up the battle array will stand there. Some say that לַעֲדוֹר is like לַעֲרֹך, to set up a battle array. of double heart It is explained in Genesis Rabbah (Lev. Rabbah 25:2): “... whether with intention or without intention, they would be victorious.”
Ralbag
'And who could order the battle array, and were not of double heart' - The word used here for 'order' applies equally to a flock and to an army: Scripture likens the army to a flock, which has a shepherd who leads it wherever he wishes. Likewise, 'the ranks of the battle line' (verse 38) means those who arrange the battle line.
Metzudat David
'And who could order the battle array, and were not of double heart' — meaning, they came to wage war on his behalf wholeheartedly, and did not come with a divided heart, which is a matter of deceit; so too, "they speak with a double heart" (Psalms 12:3), the sense being that a man appears to speak and act on behalf of one heart, while another heart within him is not truly with him — this is a figure of speech.
Metzudat Zion
And to order [the battle line] (ula'ador) - Its meaning is like "la'aroch" (to arrange); and for this reason a battle formation is called a "ma'arachah," and a gathering of livestock is called an "eder" (flock).
Malbim
'And who could order the battle array' — this refers to a military tactic in which the troops would take their stand in ranks, group facing group, yet all of them would be of a single heart with one another in order to overcome the enemy.

Rashi
for there was joy in Israel that they had a prosperous and wise king.
Metzudat David
'They who were nigh to them' — those who lived near the men of Hebron. 'Even as far as Issachar,' etc. — even though their inheritance was at the far edge of the border of the land of Israel, as stated in Joshua, they were nonetheless close to the members of the tribes across the Jordan. 'And on oxen' — loaded upon the oxen. 'Victual of meal' — they also brought various foods made of meal. 'For there was joy in Israel' — there was joy in Israel over having made king a wise and successful king, and therefore they brought all these things in abundance, to make a feast and rejoice.
Metzudat Zion
'And on mules' — these are the offspring of a horse and a donkey. 'Cakes of figs' — dried figs pressed together into a single mass. 'And clusters of raisins' — dried grapes.
