'Now David was old and full of days; and he made Solomon his son king over Israel.' The Levites are numbered from thirty years old — thirty-eight thousand — and assigned: twenty-four thousand 'to oversee the work of the house of Hashem,' six thousand officers and judges, four thousand doorkeepers, and four thousand who 'praised Hashem with the instruments which I made for praise.' The courses of Gershon, Kohath, and Merari are set down; 'Aaron was separated, that he should be sanctified as most holy, he and his sons for ever.' Then the count drops to twenty years old, for the reason that changes everything: 'the Levites shall no more have need to carry the tabernacle' — their work now is the house itself: the courts, the chambers, the purifying of all holy things, 'and to stand every morning to thank and praise Hashem, and likewise at evening.'

'Now David... and he made [Solomon] king' — he had already made Solomon king, as mentioned in [the book of] Kings; and here [Ezra] comes to relate what David did before his death, after he had made Solomon king and prepared himself to go the way of all the earth: at that time he organized the courses of the priesthood and the Levites, and afterward he charged Solomon and was gathered to his people.

'To oversee the work of the house of Hashem' — meaning: to take charge of the work of the house of Hashem. This will be, as I understand it, in line with what is stated afterward: for the service of the house of Hashem, over the courtyards and over all the chambers, and over the purity of every holy thing, and the work of the service of the house of God — meaning that they would clean the House and all its parts and guard it from impurity; they would also guard the sacred things so that they not become impure. They were responsible for the work of the showbread, and for the fine flour of the meal-offering, that it be sifted as is proper, and for the wafers, the griddle-cakes, and the pan-cakes; and for measuring whatever needed to be measured there for the requirements of the service, whether liquid or dry. In general, they served the priests in whatever they needed for the service of the house of Hashem. And of them, six thousand were counted as officers and judges, for the teachers of the Torah came from the tribe of Levi, and therefore the great and small Sanhedrin, and the judges throughout the places of Israel, were drawn from them, since they were more fitting for this at that time — even though it would have been possible to appoint them from the rest of Israel as well. Now, it cannot be said that all these judges and officers were from the tribe of Levi alone, for that would make them about a sixth of the tribe.
Metzudat David
'Of these ... were to oversee' — of these he appointed [men] to oversee, etc. 'the work,' etc. — [meaning] at the time of the altar service.
Metzudat Zion
To oversee (lenatzeach) - The work of song is called by a term related to "nitzu'ach" (contending), for it was the way of the masters of song to vie with one another in raising their voice and in mastering the melody. And officers (veshoterim) - These are the enforcers, who compel [people] to carry out the rulings of the judges.
Malbim
'Of these' — these are David's own words, as he concludes (in verse 5), 'which I have made'; he directed how they were to be divided for their service.

'Of the Gershonites' — Gershon had sons: Ladan and Shimei.
Malbim
‘Ladan’ — According to Radak, this is Libni (mentioned in the Torah, and above at 6:2), and following his view the commentators explained that Jehiel, Zetham, and Joel are the same as Jahath, Zimmah, and Joah, who are listed above (6:5) as sons of Libni. But all of this is mistaken, because the list above proceeds from father to son, as is proven there (6:27-28). The essential point is that Ladan is not Libni himself, but rather one of Libni's descendants, from whom this particular fathers' house began; and Shimei (mentioned in verse 9) is Shimei son of Jahath son of Libni, mentioned above (6:27-28), as I explained there that Jahath was a son of Libni. This lets us understand how two fathers' houses branched off from Libni: through Ladan son of Libni — Ladan's sons were Jehiel, and Zetham and Joel were sons of Jehiel, as is explained below (26:22); indeed it appears there that Jehiel and Zetham were separated from Libni by a number of generations, since they lived in the days of David — and through Jahath: the sons of Shimei son of Jahath were Shelomith and so on, and he [Shimei] had another son named Zimmah, mentioned above there, who did not form a fathers' house of his own. And the sons of Shimei in verse 10 are the sons of Shimei son of Gershon.

'The sons of Shimei,' etc. — it appears that this Shimei was one of the sons of Ladan, or one of his grandsons, and is mentioned briefly here; this is indicated by the phrase 'These were the heads of the fathers' houses of Ladan.' It appears from this passage that Gershon had nine fathers' houses: Jehiel, Zetham, Joel, Shelomith, Haziel, Haran, Jahath, and Zina — that makes eight; and Jeush and Beriah together made up one fathers' house, since they did not have many sons.

And Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second; but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons; therefore they became a fathers’ house in one reckoning.

First appearance of the root פקדה ("to·oversight") in I Chronicles. The etnachta (major mid-verse pause) falls on 'the·second', dividing the verse into phrases of 4 and 9 words. Full calculation: וַיְהִי־יַ֣חַת [and·he·was·Jahath] (449) + הָרֹ֔אשׁ [the·head] (506) + וְזִיזָ֖ה [and·Zizah] (35) + הַשֵּׁנִ֑י [the·second] (365) + וִיע֤וּשׁ [and·Jeush] (392) + וּבְרִיעָה֙ [and·Beriah] (293) + לֹא־הִרְבּ֣וּ [not·they·multiplied] (244) + בָנִ֔ים [sons] (102) + וַיִּֽהְיוּ֙ [and·they·became] (37) + לְבֵ֣ית [to·house·of] (442) + אָ֔ב [father] (3) + לִפְקֻדָּ֖ה [to·oversight] (219) + אֶחָֽת [one] (409) = 3496.
Metzudat David
'was the chief' — he was the first father's house among the sons of Shimei. 'and Zizah' — he is the aforementioned Zina. 'in one' — this word also refers back to 'a fathers' house,' meaning that they were counted as a single group with a single head.
Metzudat Zion
For a reckoning (lifkudah) - An expression of appointment and being placed in charge of accounts.
Malbim
‘they became a fathers’ house’ — Accordingly, Gershon had nine fathers' houses. (And what the commentary of the Gra (Vilna edition) states — that they did not become a single fathers' house until the days of Ezra — is not correct, for this passage speaks of the days of David.)

'That he should be sanctified as most holy' — he says this because the tribe of Levi itself was holy, and Aaron was sanctified beyond it. 'To minister to Him, and to bless in His name for ever' — this is the priestly blessing.
Metzudat David
'and to bless in His name' — this is the priestly blessing, with the raising of the hands.

‘And Eliezer had no other sons’ — And what is stated below (26:25), ‘of Eliezer: Rehabiah his son, and Jeshaiah his son,’ there ‘his son’ means the son of Rehabiah [not of Eliezer]. ‘were very many’ — This form follows the grammatical pattern of a lamed-heh verb [from a root meaning “to become great”]; it can therefore also be understood in the sense of greatness and prominence, for it is explained below that Shelomith, of the sons of Rehabiah, and his brothers were put in charge of all the treasuries of the sacred donations consecrated to the Temple — vast hoards of enormous wealth, entrusted only to men of very high standing.

‘And Eleazar died’ — Accordingly, it would seem that only twenty-two divisions can be found; but the words of the Torah are filled out elsewhere, for below (24:27) it states: ‘the sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi, the sons of Jaaziah, his son,’ and ‘the sons of Merari, of Jaaziah his son: Shoham, and Zaccur, and Ibri.’ The meaning is that from Mahli came ‘the sons of Jaaziah his son’ — that is, his son's son [grandson] — and this Jaaziah is the one mentioned above (6:10): ‘the sons of Merari: Mahli, Libni his son, Shimei his son, Uzzah his son, Shimea his son’; Uzzah there is the Jaaziah mentioned here. And the sons of Jaaziah were Shoham — who is the Shimea mentioned above — and Shoham had two sons, Zaccur and Ibri, who became heads of fathers' houses after Eleazar died without sons; they completed the twenty-four divisions, which consisted of nine divisions from Gershon, nine from Kohath, and six from Merari.

'From twenty years old and upward' — here it says 'from twenty years old and upward,' even though the Torah had set the age at 'from thirty years old and upward until fifty years old,' because those ages applied specifically to those who performed the work of carrying the Tabernacle, as we explained in Parashat Bamidbar Sinai. But from this point on, the Levites no longer had to carry the Tabernacle and all its vessels for its service, for this House being built in Jerusalem would be its resting place forever; Hashem, blessed be He, granted His people rest from having His House travel from place to place, as had happened until then. Therefore, in David's final words, the sons of Levi were counted from twenty years old and upward, this being their standing to serve the sons of Aaron in the service of the house of Hashem — over the courtyards, the chambers, and the other services mentioned here. And the Levites were fit for these tasks from the age of twenty.
Metzudat David
'after their fathers' houses,' etc. — these were the heads of the fathers' houses for the members of their fathers' houses, for all who were mustered among them. 'in the number of names' — they were counted by a tally that recorded their names, one by one. 'who did the work,' etc. — the singers, the gatekeepers, and those in charge.
Malbim
‘who did the work … from twenty years old’ — David lowered the age for the start of their service to twenty. Scripture gives the reason, for it goes on to say ‘for David said’: David explained that the Torah's requirement that a Levite be thirty years old applied only in the wilderness, where the Tabernacle had to be carried on the shoulder, which required physical strength — and a man reaches [full] strength at thirty. But once Hashem had given His people rest, the Levites no longer had to carry the Tabernacle, and there was no longer any need for them to be thirty. This follows the later answer given by the Kesef Mishneh (Hilchot Klei HaMikdash 3:7) in reconciling the Rambam's words there, that the requirement of being thirty applied only to the time when they carried [the Tabernacle] on the shoulder; while according to the first answer he wrote — that it applied only to the service of song — one could say that the younger Levites were used for other tasks, as will be stated below.

'and also the Levites' — and if so, the Levites too no longer need to carry the tabernacle and its vessels from place to place as they carried until now, and they now serve only to sing, for which twenty years of age suffices; for it was the labor of carrying on the shoulder that required thirty years of age, to have full strength, and not the singing. 'for its service' — [the vessels] made for the service of the tabernacle.

'For by the last ordinances of David,' etc. — meaning, although in David's own words it was stated above 'from thirty years old,' this verse means that by David's later ordinances they were counted from twenty years old; but at first this had not occurred to him, and he intended to count them, as stated in the Torah, from thirty years old.

For their station was alongside the sons of Aaron, etc. This resembles (Num. 18:2): “... and they shall join with you and minister to you.” and over the purity of all sacred things so that if the House and its vessels become unclean, they will be appointed to purify it, for so we find with Hezekiah, as it is written (below II Chron. 29:16): “And the Levites accepted to take out to the Kidron Valley outside,” and it is written (ibid. verse 17): “And they commenced on the first of the first month to sanctify, etc.”
Metzudat David
'For their station,' etc. — meaning, since they were appointed to stand under the authority of the sons of Aaron, etc., twenty years of age therefore sufficed. 'in the courts' — [Scripture] now explains what the service of the house of Hashem consisted of, saying that they would be placed in charge of the courts, etc. 'and in the purifying' — to guard the purity of sacred things, so that they not become impure. 'even the work,' etc. — and the rest of the work of the service, etc.
Malbim
‘For their station’ — Since many tasks were needed and the older Levites, thirty years old and up, were not sufficient [in number], the lesser, non-primary tasks were given to those younger than thirty, while song, gatekeeping, and the like were reserved for the Levites who were thirty years old and up. ‘and in the purifying’ — [This means] to purify [remove] the impurity that was found in the Sanctuary, as stated below (II Chronicles 29:16), ‘and the Levites took it to carry out to the brook Kidron.’ This refers to the courts, and to purifying the sacred vessels of the courts and the chambers, for it is the duty of the priests to remove impurity found in the Temple, as is explained at the end of tractate Eruvin.

And for every offering up of burnt offerings to the Lord on Sabbaths, on New Moons The meaning is: They will be appointed over the chambers and also over the chamber of the house of the lambs, where the sacrificial animals are kept, and they will bring [them] to the priests constantly every day, according to the number that is required for each day, whether on weekdays, whether on Sabbaths, and on New Moons and festivals, when additional sacrifices are offered up with the daily offerings - all these they will bring in number according to the ordinance, and they will also assist the priests in flaying the sacrifice. And so we find with Hezekiah (II Chron. 29:34): “Only the priests were few, and they could not flay all the burnt offerings; so their brethren the Levites strengthened them, etc.”

'and to offer all burnt-offerings' — to give thanks and praise at every time of offering burnt-offerings to Hashem, on the sabbaths, etc.; these are the additional [musaf] offerings. 'in number' — meaning, the burnt-offerings that come in the fixed number, according to the law of the Torah incumbent on Israel, to be offered continually before Hashem without fail.
Malbim
‘and to offer all burnt-offerings’ — for the song was sung at the time the communal burnt-offering was brought up. It can also be explained that they supervised the inspection of the lambs, and the flaying and cutting-up [of the offerings].
