II Chronicles · Chapter 15

וַעֲזַרְיָהוּ
Soundva·a·zar·ya·hu
Rootעזריהו
Value304

The spirit of God comes upon Azariah the son of Oded, and his sentence becomes the book’s covenant formula: 'Hashem is with you, while you are with Him; and if you seek Him, He will be found of you; but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you.' Asa takes courage: the detestable things go, the altar is renewed, and all Judah swears with shouting and trumpets — 'for they had sworn with all their heart, and sought Him with their whole desire; and He was found of them.' Even the queen-mother Maacah is deposed for her Asherah image.

And the spirit of God came upon Azariah the son of Oded - This means that he spoke this statement through prophecy. Hashem sent him to Asa to further strengthen his heart to do good with Hashem, he and Judah and Benjamin with him. So he said (v. 2): 'Hear me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin: Hashem is with you, so long as you are with Him.' Know that if you seek Him properly - which means walking after His commandments - then He will be found by you, and His providence will cling to you, doing good for you and saving you from harm; but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you, His providence will depart from you, and you will be abandoned to evil mishaps.

'and he went out' – He went out from his place and came before Asa upon his return from the war. 'while you are with Him' – Because you are with Him, keeping His word.
Malbim
Hashem is with you - Divine providence from above follows the deeds of those below, measure for measure: if you are with Hashem, He is with you, watching over you. and if you seek Him - further, adding more seeking and reflection upon Him and more diligence in His service, then He will be found by you still more, and the flow of abundance and good will increase. And conversely, if you forsake Him, He will forsake you, for everything depends on your own deeds. And he brought them proof of this, for behold:

Rashi
Now there were many days for Israel without a true God until you came. and without an instructing priest Since no one asks them words of Torah, the priests will not instruct you.
Ralbag
Now for long seasons Israel was without the true God - Rather, they worshiped idolatry, and had no priest to teach them the Torah, and so they came to be without Torah - for it is the priests who teach the ordinances of Hashem to Jacob and His Torah to Israel. And when Israel, in their distress, turned back to Hashem, sought Him, and cried out to Him, He was found by them; and this happened in the days of the Judges, where we find it occurred many times.
Metzudat David
'for long seasons' – There will be many days for Israel in which they will serve without the true God; these are the days of Ahaz and Menasheh and the like. 'and without a teaching priest' – It is the priest's role to teach the ways of Hashem, as it is written, "they shall teach Your ordinances," etc. (Deuteronomy 32). It means that they will seek guidance without there being a priest fit to teach, but only from whomever they choose, such as the prophets of Baal and the like. 'and without law' – They will have no desire for the Torah of Hashem, but will desire [teaching] without true law – that is, the words of the priests of idol-worship.
Metzudat Zion
Teaching — Instructing.
Malbim
Now for long seasons - that passed over Israel. without the true God - That is, awareness [of God] can come about in two ways: 1) through the prompting of the intellect, by which a person comes to recognize the true God through seeking out truths and grasping them, and so comes to know Hashem and cleave to His service by way of intellectual reflection; 2) through the prompting of the Torah, which teaches the knowledge of how to serve Hashem and testifies to reward and punishment for the one who serves and the one who rebels - as is written in Chovot HaLevavot (Sha'ar HaAvodah) on the difference between these two kinds of prompting. And the prompting of the Torah comes about either through teachers or through the study of the Torah scroll itself. Now, during the many days that had passed, they had "without" - that is, nothing at all, no true God. So too they had "without" - nothing at all - a teaching priest; and so too the Torah itself was "without" among them, to the point that they sought Hashem neither through the prompting of the intellect nor through the prompting of the Torah. And even though this went on for a long time, nevertheless:

And they returned to the Lord, the God of Israel, when they were in distress He means to say that now, when they were beset with troubles, they beseeched the Lord, the God of Israel, and they sought Him; therefore, He was found by them, and He saved you (sic) wherever you went.
Metzudat David
'but when in their distress they turned' – When Israel is in distress, they will turn back to Hashem, and when they seek Him, He will be found by them.
Malbim
but when in their distress they turned - to Hashem, the God of Israel. Even though they did not turn out of love but only because they were in distress, on account of their own trouble - which is a very low level [of return] - nevertheless, the moment they sought Him, He was found by them, and He shone His face upon them.

And in those times there was no peace to him who went out, nor to him who came in - Now, in those times, when Israel was without the true God and without Torah, there was no peace for the one who went out or came in, for outside there was the sword that bereaves, and within, terror - for there were many upheavals upon all the inhabitants of the land of Israel. And he goes on to explain why there was no peace for the one who came home: because great discomfitures were upon all the inhabitants of the lands - in every land there was disorder for its inhabitants, such as plague, famine, and wild beasts. And nation was crushed by nation - Heb. וְכֻתְּתוּ. Another instance of this is (Num. 14:45): “and they struck them and crushed them (וַיַּכְּתוּם).”
Ralbag
they were broken in pieces, nation against nation - This means that a nation would rise up to crush the nation of Israel: at that time, inhabitants of a city among the nations would fight against inhabitants of a city of Israel, for God struck Israel down at that time with every kind of distress.
Metzudat David
'and they were broken in pieces, nation against nation' – Judah fought with Israel. 'did discomfit them' – He broke them and crushed them with every kind of adversity.
Metzudat Zion
Were broken in pieces — This means breaking and crushing, as in 'and they shall beat their swords [into plowshares]' (Isaiah 2). Discomfited them — This means breaking, as in 'and the wheel of his cart crushes [it]' (ibid. 28).
Malbim
And they were broken in pieces, nation against nation - through wars, and even city against city. And from this it became recognizable - both from the sheer abundance of the troubles, and from the fact that they were of different kinds, and from the fact that they spread through all the lands - that this was not a natural occurrence, but that God threw them into confusion through all these troubles, which were punishments of [divine] providence.

Ralbag
But be you strong, and let not your hands be slack - to walk in the ways of Hashem, and let not your hands be slack from removing the abominations that you have begun to remove; for your work has a reward from Hashem.
Metzudat David
'but be you' – But you, since you have begun to hold fast to the ways of Hashem, be strong in it, and let not your hands grow slack from it, to abandon it. 'for your work shall be rewarded' – There is abundant reward held ready before the Omnipresent, to give as recompense for your deeds.
Malbim
But be you - you, who have turned back to Hashem, and to whom Hashem's providence has therefore returned, to grant you rest, because you have sought Him. strong - in the service of Hashem. and let not your hands be slack - add courage, for the work is great and the reward is great. for your work shall be rewarded - A "work" (pe'ulah) is engagement in a task even when it is not yet finished - a finished task is what is called a "deed" (ma'aseh) (as I have written elsewhere on the difference between ma'aseh and pe'ulah). So even though you will be called not "doers" but only "laborers," because the task has no fixed limit, still you will receive reward for the very engaging in it - for, as it is taught, the task is not yours to complete, but neither are you free to desist from it (Avot 2:16).

And when Asa heard these words — meaning, when [Azariah] recounted what had happened in the days of the Judges, which served as proof for his words of prophecy, and Asa heard the prophecy — the prophecy of Oded the prophet — he then took courage to remove all the detestable things and to renew the altar of Hashem that was before the porch, which is the altar of burnt offering. Now [the verse] calls it "the prophecy of Oded the prophet," though it was actually the prophecy that his son [Azariah] had prophesied, for in this book matters of the son are attributed to the father in many places. Thus you will find it saying that a father "begot" sons who were in fact his descendants many generations later, as was explained at the beginning of this book.
Metzudat David
'even the prophecy' – And when he heard the prophecy of Oded the prophet – for he too had prophesied words like these, even though this is not [explicitly] mentioned in the text. 'the detestable things' – The idols, loathsome like vermin (shekatzim). 'and he renewed' – He repaired it and rebuilt it anew.
Malbim
And when Asa heard - From this Asa understood that there was still more incumbent on him to do, and that he still needed to strengthen himself in order to complete what he had not yet done. even the prophecy of Oded the prophet - This carries a double meaning: 1) it is the prophecy of [Azariah], son of Oded [as identified earlier]; 2) he saw that this was prophesied with so powerful a spirit of God that the prophet himself was invigorated and strengthened by his own spirit of prophecy (in the language of Psalms 20:9, "but we are risen, and stand upright" - va-nit'oded). "Oded" here is a transitive verb: the prophecy itself invigorated and strengthened the prophet - and this is a sign of how perfect this prophecy was. Therefore he took courage, as [Azariah] had told him, "be strong, and let not your hands be slack." and put away the detestable things - those which he had not yet removed. and out of the cities - where he had not removed [them] at all.

And he gathered all Judah and Benjamin, and those who sojourned with them out of Ephraim and Manasseh, and out of Simeon, etc. — You should know that in the fifteenth year of Asa's reign there was a war between Asa and Baasa, in which Asa defeated Baasa and brought back plunder from Israel. This is what was already mentioned in this passage: that in the third month of the fifteenth year of Asa's reign, they offered sacrifices to Hashem on that day from the plunder that they had brought. Now this plunder cannot have been from the Cushites, for it was already stated earlier that in his days the land was quiet for ten years, which indicates that his war came after those ten years; and this war cannot have been with Baasa, for it was already stated that there was no war until the thirty-fifth year of the kingdom of Asa — and that [thirty-fifth year] actually fell in the fifteenth year of Asa's own reign, as we explained in the Book of Kings, since the thirty-five years necessarily began with the rise of Rehoboam's kingdom. It is therefore clear that until the fifteenth year of Asa's own reign there was no war with Baasa. From this it becomes clear that that plunder was brought from Israel, and that it was in that very war that Asa defeated Baasa; and because of this, many from Israel fell in with him, seeing that Hashem his God was with him. And it was concerning that war with Baasa that Azariah son of Oded the prophet spoke to him the words mentioned above.
Metzudat Zion
They fell [to him] — This means turning/inclining, as in 'and she alighted from the camel' (Genesis 24:64); meaning, they turned themselves to be under his rule.

'for they had sworn with all their heart' – Not merely out of acknowledging the king's command, which would have left them reluctant about the matter. 'and He was found of them' – And therefore He was found by them, and gave them rest all around.
Malbim
And all Judah rejoiced - for it was done not under compulsion but joyfully. For: 1) "they had sworn with all their heart" - not like an oath taken under duress, in which the mouth and the heart do not agree; 2) "and sought Him with their whole desire (ratzon)" - the definition of ratzon, and its difference from mere "want" (chefetz), is that one acts from ratzon when one grasps the goodness of the thing in itself, not out of other, ulterior motives such as hope of reward or fear of punishment, which fall under the category of chefetz (as I have written in my Torah commentary, HaTorah VeHaMitzvah, on the phrase "and it shall be accepted for him, to make atonement for him," Leviticus 1:4). And therefore "He was found of them," and "Hashem gave them rest."

'the mother of Asa the king' – She was the mother of his father [i.e., his grandmother], but because she raised him, she is called his mother. 'from being queen' – From continuing to be a ruling queen-mother, so that she would not incite people to idol worship. 'because she had made' – Because she had made a mifletzet [a horrid idol-image] – some kind of figure made to serve as an idol. And just as idols are called "atzabim," because they grieve (ma'atziv) the hearts of their worshipers, so this one is called "mifletzet," because it induces trembling, from the same root as "palatzut be'atatani" – "horror has overwhelmed me" (Isaiah 21). 'and made dust of it' – He ground it very fine. 'and burnt it at the brook Kidron' – Meaning, he burned it and cast its ashes into the brook Kidron, because the ash of an idol is forbidden for benefit.
Malbim
And also Maacah the mother of Asa - This can be explained [in one of two ways]: that she was actually the mother of his father [i.e., his grandmother], and is called his "mother" because she raised him; or, that his father likewise had a wife named Maacah [a different woman, Asa's actual mother]. And in Kings it is written only "and burnt it," whereas here it adds "and made dust of it, and burnt it."

Rashi
The high places, however, were not removed private high places, upon which they had become accustomed to sacrificing to Heaven from the time that Shiloh was destroyed until the Temple was built. [Those who worshipped there] were punishable by כָּרֵת, premature death.
Metzudat David
'but the high places' – Which were made [for sacrifice] to Heaven; and since once the [Temple] House was built, high places became forbidden everywhere, this was counted as a sin.
Malbim
But the high places - for the heart of the people was not whole as it should have been, but the heart of Asa was whole. He himself did not sacrifice at a high place; on the contrary, he brought the dedicated things of his father, and his own dedicated things, into the House of Hashem, to strengthen His House - the very opposite of those who sacrificed at the high places, who would leave their dedicated things in the shrines of the high places.

Rashi
And there was no war, etc. We learned in Seder Olam (ch. 16): “In the thirty-sixth year of Asa’s kingdom, Baasha, the king of Israel, advanced.” Is it possible to say so? Had not Baasha already died in the twenty-sixth year of Asa’s reign, as it is written (I Kings 16:8): “In the twenty-sixth year of Asa, king of Judah, Elah the son of Baasha reigned”? What then is the meaning of “In the thirty-sixth year of Asa’s kingdom”? This corresponds to the thirty-six years from the time that Solomon married Pharaoh’s daughter, for so it is written (I Kings 2:39-46): “and two of Shimei’s slaves ran away... And the king commanded Benaiah etc. and he smote (Sic) and fell upon him,” and immediately following this Scripture writes about Solomon’s marriage to Pharaoh’s daughter, i.e., immediately after those three years, and in the fourth year he married her, and he reigned forty years. We find that she was with him thirty-six years, and corresponding to them were the thirty-six years that the decree was issued upon the kings of Aram to be adversaries to Israel and finally to fall into the hand[s] of David’s sons. Therefore, it is stated: “In the thirty-sixth year of Asa’s kingdom.” In the sixteenth year of his reign, after Zerah the Cushite fell into his hand[s], that is the thirty-sixth year from Solomon’s death, and in the sixteenth [year] of Asa, the king of Israel and the king of Aram made a treaty to advance and provoke Asa. Asa sinned, as it is stated (16:2f.): “And Asa brought out silver and gold... saying, ‘Make (sic) a treaty between me and you...’ And Ben Hadad heeded.” And the kings of Aram did not cease being adversaries to Israel until Ahaz died, and in the third year of Ahaz, the king of Israel and the king of Aram made a treaty to advance and provoke Ahaz, and Ahaz had no merit that they should fall into his hand[s]; so they both fell into the hand [s] of Tiglath-Pileser, the king of Assyria.
Metzudat David
'and there was no more war' – Between him and the king of Israel. 'to the five and thirtieth year' – Until the end of the thirty-fifth year of the reign of Asa.
Malbim
'And there was no more war, to the five and thirtieth year' — Our Sages already explained that what is stated afterward — that in the thirty-sixth year of Asa's reign Baasa went up against Judah — cannot be understood literally, for by that time Baasa had already died, as is clear in Kings. Rather, it means the reign as counted now, a count that began from the day the kingdom of the House of David split off, which was a different sort of kingship than before, since he now reigned over Judah alone; and the thirty-six years were completed in Asa's sixteenth year (these being Jeroboam's seventeen, his son Abijah's three, and Asa's sixteen). And from what was stated above (verse 10), that 'they gathered themselves together at Jerusalem in the fifteenth year of Asa's reign,' which was at the time he fought Zerah the Ethiopian — as it says there, that they sacrificed from the spoil they had brought — it is clear that his war with the Ethiopians was in the thirty-fifth year of the reign counted as a whole from the days of Rehoboam. That is why it says here that until that time there had been no war — meaning no major war, for there had been minor wars before this, as it says (14:1), 'in his days the land was quiet ten years,' implying that afterward it was no longer quiet from minor wars.
