II Chronicles · Chapter 25

בֶּן־עֶשְׂרִים
Soundben-es·rim
Rootבן
Value672

Amaziah’s epitaph opens his story: 'And he did that which was right in the eyes of Hashem, but not with a whole heart.' He hires a hundred thousand Israelite mercenaries and, told to send them home, asks the book’s most human question — 'But what shall we do for the hundred talents?' 'Hashem is able to give you much more than this.' He smites Seir, then carries home Seir’s gods and worships them; mocks the prophet; challenges Joash of Israel and is answered with the parable of the thistle and the cedar; loses, and Jerusalem’s wall is breached four hundred cubits.

Ralbag
'Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together, and ordered them according to their fathers' houses,' etc. - This account was already related in the Book of Kings in a far more abbreviated form. 'and found them three hundred thousand chosen men, able to go forth to war' - This points out how remarkably their numbers had diminished from the days of Jehoshaphat until that day.
Metzudat David
'According to their fathers' houses,' etc. — each ancestral house by itself, and each captain of a thousand and captain of a hundred with his own men by themselves.
Malbim
and found them - Note that in the days of Jehoshaphat there was four times this number, and even in the days of Asa there was double this number; that is why he also hired a hundred thousand men from Israel.

for God is not with Israel, all the sons of Ephraim because Jeroboam was of the tribe of Ephraim, and he was the first to cause Israel to sin. And in every generation thereafter he remained a stumbling block for them, for they worshipped the golden calves of Jeroboam.
Metzudat David
'All the children of Ephraim' — the kingdom of the ten tribes is called by the name of Ephraim, because Jeroboam, the first king who reigned over them, was of the descendants of Ephraim.
Malbim
for Hashem is not with Israel - Meaning: even if you rely on salvation from Hashem, know that Hashem is not with the children of Ephraim - and it has already been proclaimed in war that a man who fears because of the transgressions in his hand should go and return home. And if you say that you are not relying on success through Hashem but only on strength and might in the natural way, and that is why you need a large force - to this I say to you:

Rashi
But if you come The meaning is: If you do not believe my words, will you not try [to put effort into your military campaign?] Come, do, and strengthen yourself for war. to help or to cause to stumble The meaning is: He has the strength to help you without the army of Ephraim and to cause you to stumble if you take them with you.
Ralbag
'But if you will go' - Rather, you alone shall go. 'and do engage never so valiantly in battle' - Now 'do' [aseh] is an infinitive form, and so too 'valiantly' [chazak]; and the meaning is: if you do this - strengthening yourself for battle by hiring a hundred thousand men from Israel - Hashem, may He be blessed, will make you stumble before the enemy, instead of helping you as He might wish; for Hashem, may He be blessed, has the power to help whomever He wishes even if he is weak, and to make stumble whomever He wishes even if he is strong.
Metzudat David
'But if you will go' — go to the battle alone, and not together with them. 'God will cast you down' — meaning, [understand it as though it read] 'lest He cast you down'; from the context you can supply what is missing: that is, if the army of Israel comes with you, God may cast you down before the enemy.
Malbim
But if you will go - Meaning: if you wish to go in your own strength, and do engage never so valiantly in battle - you may use strategies and strengthen yourself with a large force, but it will not help or avail, for God will make you stumble before the enemy. For Israel's success does not come about in the natural way but only through Hashem, who either helps those who trust in Him or makes those who rely on the arm of flesh stumble, for God has power to help, and to cast down - and so on.

'But what shall we do' — meaning, must I then lose the money? Surely they will not give it back to me. 'Hashem is able,' etc. — He will make up your loss from elsewhere.
Malbim
But what shall we do for the hundred talents - For when one hires a laborer and then retracts after the laborer has already gone [to the work], if this is through the employer's own fault he must pay him wages as for an idle laborer (sechar po'el batel), but if it happened through an unavoidable circumstance (ones), he is exempt (Choshen Mishpat 333). And here it was indeed an ones, for it had never occurred to him that the prophet would come and warn him about this; if so, they [the soldiers] would be obligated to return the hundred talents to him. So he [the man of God] answered: Hashem is able to give you much more than this - meaning, let the money remain with them.

'Then Amaziah separated them' — from among the men of Judah. 'Their anger was greatly kindled' — for they took it as an insult.

Then Amaziah separated them - to go back to their own place. And they [the Ephraimite troops] assumed that the men of Judah had protested to their king against their marching with them, out of hatred for them, and this is why their anger was kindled against the men of Judah.

that God has given counsel to destroy you i.e., If you do not hearken to My advice to follow the straight path, you should know, O king, that the Lord has given counsel to destroy you because you have done this, and have not hearkened to the counsel. Now what is the counsel? That he enticed you to provoke the king of Israel and to fall before him, as it is written: “And Amaziah the king of Judah took counsel, and he sent to Joash, etc.”
Ralbag
'Then the prophet forbore, and said: I know that God has determined to destroy you' - He points out here that once a prophet sees that if he continues to rebuke [the people] they will only add transgression to their sin and rise up to kill him, he is not obligated to repeat that same prophetic message to them again, having already carried out Hashem's mission with it. And we learn from this that certain sins are of a kind that deprive a person of the freedom of choice to repent from them - and this indeed happens only with very grave sins, for Hashem, may He be blessed, wills that the fitting punishment reach the sinners for them.
Metzudat David
'Have we made you of the king's counsel' — who, indeed, appointed you counselor to the king? 'Forbear' — from these words of yours. 'Why should you be smitten' — by one of my men. 'That God has determined' — He determined it of His own accord.
Malbim
Have we made you of the king's counsel? - Since he [the prophet] had not said this to him in the name of Hashem, but only by way of advice, he [the king] grew angry at him. and said - I did not say this of my own mind; rather, I knew through prophecy that God had counseled to destroy you on account of this sin that you committed. That is why I told you, by way of advice, to repent. and have not hearkened to my counsel - to remove Hashem's fierce anger from upon you.

Rashi
The thistle that was in Lebanon which is of short stature. sent to the cedar which is the greatest prince of all the trees. passed by and trampled the thistle The cedar did not wish to kill it because it was degrading in his eyes to cut down the thistle, but a beast of the field passed by and trampled it in contempt, for how did he dare to send such a great insult to the lofty cedar? You too are like the thistle, for you have only two tribes, and now my servants will rise up against you and trample you when they hear of this disgrace.
Metzudat David
'The thistle' — he likened Amaziah to a thistle and himself to a cedar, as if to say: even had you spoken of peace, it would be beneath me to ally myself with you, how much more so to go down to war with you. 'And trod down' — because [Amaziah's] heart had emboldened him to speak such things, [Joash] was hinting to him that his own men would trample him.
Metzudat Zion
The thistle (hachoach) - A kind of thorn, as in 'a lily among thorns' (Song of Songs 2). And trod down (vatirmos) - An expression of trampling with the foot.

Rashi
and your heart has made you haughty to pursue glory, and you wish to be glorified also on my account. In II Kings (14:10), the reading is: “Retain your honor by staying home.”
Ralbag
'will your heart therefore lift you up to glory in it? abide now at home' - Meaning, to gain honor for yourself on account of the success that came to you in the war.
Metzudat David
'You say, lo, you have smitten Edom,' etc. — and you count this an act of valor, and therefore your heart has grown proud, and you wish to add to your glory by fighting with me. 'Now' — since you have gained some honor through your victory over Edom, stay home and keep your honor. 'Why should you meddle with evil' — why should you provoke me, bringing evil upon yourself, so that you and Judah with you should fall?
Metzudat Zion
And your heart has lifted you up (v'nesa'acha libecha) - An expression of self-exaltation and pride. Meddle (titgareh) - An expression of provocation and strife, as in 'do not contend with them' (Deuteronomy 2:5).
Malbim
will your heart therefore lift you up to glory in it - There [in the parallel account in Kings] it reads, 'your heart has lifted you up to be honored; stay home.' And Ezra explains that the meaning is: you want honor, and that is why your heart lifted you up to go to war - in order to gain glory, so that the honor of the house of Judah would grow greater. In light of this, my advice to you is: stay home, and let your rest itself be your honor.

because this was from God in order to deliver them into their hands i.e., into their hands, as above (verse 16): “I know that God has given counsel to destroy you.”

that were found in the House of God with Obed-Edom for he and his sons were keepers of the treasures all their lives. and the hostage children For the Jews did not permit Amaziah to be king any longer in Jerusalem until he made the children of the officers hostages so that they would no longer rebel against him, and so did Jonathan translate it in II Kings (14:14): “the children of the officers.” Rabbi Joseph (Kara) explained “the hostage children” to mean those hostages that the king had taken as security so that their fathers would not rebel against him. This, however, does not appear correct to me because we do not find that Judah had such power over others that they could have [forced them] to give Judah their children as hostages.
Metzudat David
'And all the gold' — meaning, 'and he took all the gold,' etc.; from the context you can supply what is missing. 'With Obed-edom' — with everything found in the house of Obed-edom; for when the Ark was there in the days of David, the treasuries of consecrated things were kept in his house, and they remained there even after the Ark itself was taken from there. 'The hostages' — these are the sons of the officers, who are held by the king as pledges, so that their fathers would not rebel against him.
Metzudat Zion
The hostages (hata'aruvot) - An expression of pledges and security, as in 'what pledge' (Genesis 38).

Rashi
And from the time that Amaziah turned away from following the Lord and was defeated by the king of Israel, immediately they conspired against him in Jerusalem to kill him, because each one was grieved over his son, his brother, and his kinsman who were slain because of him, because he provoked the king of Israel. and he fled to Lachish a fortified city against which Sennacherib waged war. He fled to Lachish, where he remained fifteen years until they followed him to Lachish and assassinated him there. And during those fifteen years that he was in Lachish, Jecoliah, Uzziah’s mother, reigned in his stead. This is how it appears to me. In the commentary of Rabbi Joseph (Kara), I saw that during those fifteen years that he was in Lachish, Uzziah his son reigned in his stead, but it is incorrect to interpret it in this manner, for it is written immediately following (26:1): “who was sixteen years old.” We find that when his father fled, he was only one year old. Moreover, if this is the case, it should say, “took Uzziah and made him king instead of his father during his lifetime.” Rather, Scripture intimated that he did not reign during his father’s lifetime.

'but they sent after him to Lachish, and slew him there' - It is known from this passage that Amaziah lived fifteen years after Joash son of Jehoahaz [of Israel died]; and in the days of Joash, Amaziah had turned away from following Hashem. The intent here, therefore, is that from the time he turned away from following Hashem, they conspired against him to kill him whenever it should come into their power. And when Amaziah learned of this conspiracy, he fled to Lachish to escape there from those conspiring against him. It appears that from the time he fled to Lachish, the people of Judah made his son Azariah king [alongside him], and they did not kill him in Lachish until Azariah had reigned about eleven years, as we explained in the Book of Kings. This is because in the fifteenth year of Amaziah's reign, Jeroboam son of Joash [of Israel] became king; and Jeroboam's reign preceded Azariah's by about four years, for in the thirty-eighth year of Azariah's reign, Zechariah son of Jeroboam became king. And if we say that Azariah had already completed thirty-eight full years [as king] by the time Zechariah began to reign, then Jeroboam's reign preceded Azariah's by only three years, leaving twelve years that Azariah reigned during the lifetime of Amaziah his father. This second explanation fits very well with what we explained in the Book of Daniel, that the duration of the First Temple's standing was four hundred and twenty-six years.
Metzudat David
'Now from the time,' etc. — 'they made a conspiracy' [means that] from that time they began to conspire against him and rebel against him.
Malbim
Now from the time that Amaziah did turn away from following Hashem - the priests of Hashem plotted a conspiracy against him as soon as he turned away from Hashem, and once the conspiracy broke into the open he fled to Lachish, and there he found supporters for all these years, until the hand of the conspirators grew strong and they killed him there. And I have already explained (there, in my commentary on Kings) that three years after Amaziah's war with Joash the conspiracy broke out and they made Uzziah king while [Amaziah] was still alive; he himself was in Lachish and reigned there, and after twelve years the conspirators grew strong and killed him. And this is what Micah means, 'Bind the chariot to the swift steeds, O inhabitant of Lachish,' as I explained there.
