II Chronicles · Chapter 33

בֶּן־שְׁתֵּים
Soundben-shteim
Rootשנים
Value802

Manasseh undoes it all — altars for Baalim in the two courts of the house, his children through the fire, 'evil more than did the nations, whom Hashem destroyed.' Assyria takes him with hooks to Babylon. 'And when he was in distress, he besought Hashem his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers. And he prayed to Him; and He was entreated of him... Then Manasseh knew that Hashem He was God.' The penitent king comes home, takes away the strange gods, and repairs the altar. His son Amon repeats the sin without the repentance, and his own servants slay him.

Twelve years old - From here until verse 10, the text is copied from II Kings chapter 21, and there I explained the variations that appear between the two books - see there at length. As for the statement "Hashem spoke to Manasseh," it is explained there in Kings what that word was, which He spoke through His prophets.

'and he compassed about Ophel' — Meaning, he carried the wall around Ophel, which was the highest ground around Jerusalem, and he raised the wall to a very great height, and he stationed army captains in all the fortified cities of Judah to strengthen them against the enemy. It appears that he removed the idols only from the House of Hashem and from Jerusalem, but that afterward, for the rest of his days, neither the people of Judah nor he himself worshiped idols; however, they continued to offer sacrifices to Hashem their God at the high places, and in this alone did they sin, for the high places had already been forbidden.

The prayer he prayed afterward is holy, and is found among "the words of the seers" - it is preserved in Psalms (chapter 66), as I explained there; and the seers also recorded his sins in detail.
