The second attempt is done by the book: 'None ought to carry the ark of God but the Levites; for Hashem has chosen them to carry the ark of Hashem, and to minister to Him for ever.' David names the earlier failure plainly: 'because you bore it not at the first, Hashem our God made a breach upon us, for that we sought Him not according to the ordinance.' The priests and Levites sanctify themselves; the singers are appointed 'with instruments of music, psalteries and harps and cymbals, sounding aloud and lifting up the voice with joy'; and the ark of the covenant comes up with shouting, horns, trumpets, and cymbals — David, 'clothed with a robe of fine linen,' dancing before it, while 'Michal the daughter of Saul looked out at the window... and she despised him in her heart.'

'He prepared a place for the ark of God, and pitched a tent for it' - This is the tent that he prepared in order to place the ark of God there.
Metzudat David
'And he prepared,' etc. — he prepared a place for the ark, and spread a tent over it.
Malbim
'And David made... and he prepared a place' — of stone construction. 'And pitched a tent for it' — of curtains spread above it, for until then it had been moved about in a tent and Tabernacle, as is written (Joshua 18:1; II Samuel 7:6).

Rashi
except the Levites, for the Lord chose them i.e., God chose the Levites [to carry the Ark], and not a cart, for because we placed it in a cart, Uzza was punished, and that is what is stated further: “For from the beginning, [when] you were not [the bearers], the Lord our God made a breach in us, for we had not sought Him properly,” for we placed it in a cart.
Ralbag
'None ought to carry the ark of God but the Levites' - This is written in the Torah, in connection with the service of the sons of Kohath: that the service of the sanctuary is upon them, and they shall carry it on the shoulder.
Metzudat David
'Then' — this was when Uzza died for having laid his hand upon the ark. 'For Hashem has chosen them' — so that the mishap that befell Uzza should not happen at their hands.
Malbim
'None ought to carry [it]' — For I have already explained (II Samuel 6:2-4) that they sinned on that occasion in two ways: first, in that Uzza and his brothers carried it on their shoulders from the house of Abinadab to the cart, though they were not Levites, and moreover carried it by hand, without poles; second, in that they placed it on a cart. This is why David said that only the Levites, not ordinary Israelites, should carry it. Now in the wilderness only the sons of Kohath had carried it, and David learned that this was not the fixed rule for all time, for in the portion of Eikev (Deuteronomy 10:8) it says: 'At that time Hashem set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of Hashem, to stand before Hashem... to this day; therefore Levi has no portion or inheritance with his brothers.' From this it is clear that the mitzvah of carrying the ark rests upon all the sons of Levi, and that carrying it on the shoulder is a mitzvah observed for all generations, since it says 'to this day.' This is why it says here, 'for Hashem has chosen them to carry the ark of God and to minister to Him forever' — these being, in essence, the words of the verse in the portion of Eikev, from which David derived that it is a mitzvah for all generations, whereas at first he had mistakenly thought it applied only in the wilderness.

'And David assembled... and gathered' — I have explained elsewhere that 'assembling' [hikhel] is done by voice and proclamation, and this was done for all Israel; but the Levites came of their own accord, and he gathered them to himself in order to speak with them.

'For because you bore it not at the first, Hashem our God made a breach upon us' - Meaning, because at first you, the Levites, did not carry it, Hashem our God made a breach against us - that is, the death of Uzza, who took hold of the ark, because we did not seek Him out according to the proper ordinance; for the ordinance of the Torah is that the Levites shall carry the ark on the shoulder.
Metzudat David
'At the first' — at the first bringing-up, from Kiriath-jearim. 'You bore it not' — it was not you [the Levites] who carried it up that time, and that is why it came about that Hashem broke forth against Uzza — because we did not seek Him out according to the ordinance of the Torah, which states that the sons of Levi must carry the ark; and it was because of this that the mishap occurred.
Malbim
'It was not you' — The word 'and you shall bring it up' [from the previous verse] carries forward to do double duty here as well, [so that the phrase means] 'you did not bring it up.'

And with them, their brethren the second in rank second in rank to them as gate sentries. Zechariah Ben That was his name; and all these singers and gate sentries [served] on the road by bringing the Ark. The singers and the gate sentries that David stationed after they placed the Ark into the tent that David had pitched for it and in the Tabernacle of Shiloh, were gate sentries, but they were not gate sentries while on the road, because not that many gate sentries were required. Therefore, they became singers, with the exception of two, Berechiah and Elkanah (verse 23). All this was on the road, but when the Ark rested, the singers became gate sentries.

'Their brethren of the second degree' — second to them in rank. 'Zechariah, Ben' — the intended construction is 'Zechariah the son of Jaaziel'; and [the name] 'Jaaziel' [that follows] refers to his father [as a person listed in his own right] — for so he is counted separately in verse 20. And the singers: Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, etc. To make a resounding voice, they were appointed over those musical instruments.
Metzudat David
'With cymbals' — meaning, they struck cymbals of bronze to produce a loud sound.
Malbim
'So the singers... were appointed' — [Scripture now] explains what they actually did: the singers (mentioned in verse 17) played the cymbals, while some of the doorkeepers (counted in verse 18) played — half of them on psalteries set to Alamoth and half on harps set to the Sheminith, these being types of melodies, or types of instruments (Azaziah was not counted among them at first, since he was not one of the doorkeepers). Now by strict law the doorkeepers are not supposed to assist the singers (Rambam, Hilchot Klei HaMikdash, ch. 3); but here it was not the regular Temple service-song, for by strict law one may not use more than six psalteries, nor fewer than nine harps (Rambam, ibid.), whereas here there were eight psalteries and six harps; and [normally] there is only a single pair of cymbals, whereas here there were three — because this was only in honor of the ark.

Ralbag
'With psalteries set to Alamoth' - I think these are what is called in the vernacular an ‘organas’ (organ). The nevalim [psalteries] are shaped like a kind of bellows, into which air enters and passes to the hollow pipes they contain, and thereby they produce pleasant melodies. It calls them ‘alamoth’ [hidden things] because they are hidden and concealed [from view].

And Mattithiah and Eliphelehu, etc. with harps on the sheminith to conduct those musical instruments upon which they play the psalms entitled: “For the conductor, on the sheminith.”
Ralbag
'With harps on the Sheminith' - I think this is a musical instrument that has eight strings, called in the vernacular a ‘guitarra latina’ (Latin guitar), and of this same type is what is called in the vernacular a ‘lute’; and it is the ‘ugav’ of the holy tongue, for it bears a resemblance to romantic delight [reflected in its name].
Metzudat David
'On the Sheminith' — on a lyre that has eight strings. 'To lead' — the musicians are called 'menatzchim' [leaders], because it was their practice to outdo one another in raising the voice and in perfecting the melody.

A similar instance is found (below 25:7): “And their number with their brethren, trained in song to the Lord, every expert (מֵבִין) etc.,” and it is written (ibid. verse 8): “and they cast lots, etc.,...expert (מֵבִין) with student.”
Ralbag
'And Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was over the song' - Meaning, he was the chief and leader in the song that was recited in words of thanksgiving and praise to Hashem. The reason he was made chief over the song was that he was skilled [in it], for this song should be recited only by those who are skilled.
Metzudat David
'Over the song' — in the matter of raising the voice [in song]. 'He was master in the song' — he was chief and foremost in the matter of raising the voice, and Scripture repeats its wording [for emphasis]. 'Because he was skillful' — in this matter: [knowing] how to raise the voice, and how to bring it down at the proper point.
Metzudat Zion
'Was over the song' — an expression of bearing and raising [the voice]. 'He was master' — [the word 'yasor' is] like 'yashur' with a shin, and it is an expression of 'sar' (a chief, an officer).
Malbim
'And Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was over the song [masa]' — he was the officer in charge of the Levites who sang with their mouths [vocally]; this kind of song is called 'masa,' for through it they carried [nos'im] words of praise by way of parable and poetic expression. 'He was master [yasor] in the song' — he was the one who bound together the choir of singers; at his direction they arranged the song, at his direction they began and ended, for he was expert in this art (similar to the phrase in I Kings 20:14, 'who shall bind [ye'esor] the battle,' meaning the one who arranges the battle formation and binds it together).

'And Berechiah and Elkanah were door-keepers for the ark' - Meaning, that in honor of Hashem, David appointed them as guards of the gate of the tent in which he placed the ark, in the City of David.
Metzudat David
'Door-keepers for the ark' — of old they had been doorkeepers at the tent of the ark, and now they went back to being singers.
Malbim
'And Berechiah, etc.' — Now the Levites walked behind the ark, and the seven priests with the trumpets walked in front of the ark (just as at the conquest of Jericho, when seven priests walked with jubilee-horns [shofarot] before the ark). And there were two doorkeepers from among the Levites behind the ark — Berechiah and Elkanah — who kept a space between the ark and the Levites so that they would not come too close to it; this is why they are called 'doorkeepers for the ark.' 'The priests' - would sound the trumpets, and this added to the completeness of the rejoicing. Now the blowing of trumpets is done only by the priests, as is explained regarding the thanksgiving offering; whereas the song performed with musical instruments and with the voice is done by the Levites. 'And Obed-edom... were doorkeepers for the ark' - Meaning, that when the ark was in the house of Obed-edom, these were its doorkeepers [there].
Metzudat David

'So David, and the elders of Israel, and the captains over thousands, went to bring up the ark of the covenant of Hashem out of the house of Obed-edom with joy' — everything stated up to this point is an elaboration on what is stated briefly there (II Samuel 6:12), 'So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the city of David with joy'; there it is brief, while Ezra explains it at length, concluding that David, the elders, and the officers were joyful — that they were filled with joy.

And it came to pass when God helped the Levites - Heb. בֶּעְֹזר. The “beth” of בֶּעְֹזר is vowelized with a “segol,” but as a rule, it is vowelized with a “pattah.” The meaning of “when [God] helped,” is that they did not err when they carried the Ark as they had erred in the beginning when Uzza died. And in the Book of Samuel (II 6:13), it says that when they had trodden six paces, they made this sacrifice. Our Rabbis derived from here that the Ark carried itself.
Ralbag
'And it came to pass, when God helped the Levites who bore the ark of the covenant of Hashem' - In place of this, the Book of Samuel (II Samuel 6:13) says, 'And it came to pass, when they that bore the ark of Hashem had gone six steps,' speaking there in terms of steps - for there it is made clear that Hashem helped them, in that no harm befell them in the process. There it says, 'he sacrificed an ox and a fatling,' whereas here it says, 'seven bullocks and seven rams' - and it is all one and the same, except that the matter is spelled out in greater detail in this place.
Metzudat David
'When God helped' — meaning, because God helped them and they did not stumble in bearing it, they therefore offered these sacrifices, in addition to the ox and the fatling that they sacrificed after every six steps, as is stated in II Samuel.
Malbim
'And it came to pass, when God helped the Levites who bore the ark of the covenant of Hashem, that they sacrificed seven bullocks and seven rams' — in Samuel (v. 13) it says, 'And it came to pass, when the bearers of the ark of the covenant of Hashem had gone six paces, that he sacrificed an ox and a fatling.' Ezra adds that at each of the six stages of six paces along the way, seven bullocks and seven rams were offered, as our Sages explained — see there.

And David was enwrapped in a linen robe - Heb. מְכֻרְבָּל enwrapped, as in Daniel (3:21): “their robes (וְכַרְבְּלָתְהוֹן).” A similar case is the comb (כַּרְבַּלְתָּא) of a rooster. and all the Levites were likewise enwrapped in linen robes, and since David was a singer like the Levites, he too wore their raiments, which they wore, and proof of this - to distinguish between the unclean and the clean: It was the custom of the heathen kings and princes, that when they would dine with their priests according to their custom, they would don the garb of their priests. and on David was a linen ephod like the ephod of Aaron, which was like two felt cloths, one in the front and one in the back, and it reached to his loins, and the girdle was woven from it, and he would gird himself with it.
Ralbag
'And David was clothed [mecharbel] with a robe of fine linen' - Meaning, that upon his head there was a kind of turban fashioned from a wrap of cloth, joined to a linen robe that he wore, following the practice of one who adorns himself in honor of Hashem. 'And Chenaniah, chief of the song' - Meaning, 'the chief' here is the same as 'chief of the song.' 'And David had upon him an ephod of linen' - Meaning, David was girded with a linen ephod; and Scripture does not repeat here the words Michal spoke to David and David's reply to her, relying instead on what is related about this in the Book of Samuel.
Metzudat David
'Clothed' — he was wrapped in a robe of fine linen, and so too were all the Levites, etc. 'The master of the singers in the song' — chief in raising the voice, over the singers. 'An ephod of linen' — a type of garment fashioned after the ephod of the High Priest, worn especially by those who devote themselves to the service of Hashem; and so it is stated concerning Samuel, that he was girded with a linen ephod, even though he was only a Levite.
Metzudat Zion
'Clothed with a robe' — [meaning] wrapped [in a garment]; this is an Aramaic term, as in 'their coats, their hosen, and their hats' (Daniel 3), which means their wrappings. 'A robe' — the name of an outer garment, like the robe worn by the Kohen Gadol (High Priest). 'Fine linen' — flax.
Malbim
'And David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, and all the Levites who bore the ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah the master of the singers in the song; and David had upon him an ephod of linen' — there (Samuel, vv. 14-15) it is told that David distinguished himself in three respects: (1) in his person, in that he ran with all his might before the ark; (2) in his dress, in that he was girded with an ephod like the garb of the priests, not royal garb; (3) in that he joined with all Israel in bringing up the ark with shouting and the sound of the shofar. Ezra had no need to write all this again, since it was already known from there; he only added, to clarify, that David went wrapped and enveloped (as in 'karbelatehon,' Daniel 3) in a robe of fine linen, and that the Levites who bore the ark, and the singers — meaning those who sang with their mouths — and Chenaniah their leader were likewise enveloped [in such robes]; and David in particular also wore a linen ephod over the robe, like the garb of the priests. He further added that, beyond what is stated there — that all Israel brought up [the ark] with shouting and the sound of the shofar — they also had trumpets, cymbals, harps, and lyres, and that those in Israel skilled in music played [these instruments].

Rashi
And Michal the daughter of Saul, etc. Since the Book of Chronicles is for David’s honor, it does not write here what Michal said to David, as is written in Samuel (II 6:20): “How esteemed was the king of Israel today, who appeared today in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the idlers would appear!” because it was a disgrace for David that a woman said that to him.
Metzudat David
'The ark of the covenant' — the ark in which were placed the tablets that were given as part of the covenant. 'She despised him' — she held him in contempt in her heart, thinking it was not fitting for a king to demean his own honor so greatly, even though it was done for the honor of the ark of Hashem.
Metzudat Zion
'Looked out' — an expression of seeing and gazing. 'At the window' — [meaning] through the window. 'Dancing' — an expression of leaping and jumping for joy. 'And making merry' — an expression of joy.
Malbim
'And it came to pass, as the ark of the covenant of Hashem came to the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looked out at the window, and saw king David dancing and making merry; and she despised him in her heart' — this too is stated in Samuel, where (v. 16) it is written 'came [into] the city of David,' but Ezra explains it as '[came] as far as the city of David' — that she saw it from a distance and despised it in her heart. And there it is written 'leaping about and whirling (mefazez u-mecharker),' which Ezra explains as 'dancing and making merry.'
