The ark is set in its tent with burnt-offerings and peace-offerings; David blesses the people and deals to everyone 'a loaf of bread, and a cake made in a pan, and a sweet cake' — then hands Asaph and his brethren the book’s great psalm: 'O give thanks to Hashem, call upon His name; make known His doings among the peoples'... 'O give thanks to Hashem; for He is good; for His mercy endures for ever'... 'Blessed be Hashem, the God of Israel, from everlasting even to everlasting' — and all the people answer Amen. Ministers are left before the ark 'continually, as every day’s work required'; Zadok and the priests remain before the tabernacle at the high place in Gibeon — the worship running in two places until the house is built. 'And all the people departed every man to his house; and David returned to bless his house.'

'And set it' — an expression of standing [something] in place.
Malbim
'And they brought in the ark of God, and set it in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it, and they offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings before God' — these three verses are mentioned in Samuel as well, and there the narrative concludes, 'And all the people departed, each to his house, and David returned to bless his household.' Ezra found in the Chronicles of the Kings of the House of David that, before the people departed, David first arranged the guard duty of the ark and the service of the Tabernacle, exactly as told in this book, and he copied this in order to clarify that only after these events did the people go to their homes and David to his.

and to make mention and to give thanks and to praise “To make mention” means to recite those two psalms in which it is written (Ps. 38, 70): “A song of David to mention”; “and to thank” [means to recite] (ibid. 105): “Give thanks to the Lord, call out in His name”; “and to praise,” [by reciting] those psalms starting with “Hallelujah.”
Ralbag
'And he appointed certain of the Levites to minister before the ark of Hashem,' etc. - It notes here that even though the [sacrificial] service was not performed in the place David had prepared to house the ark of Hashem, nevertheless, in honor of Hashem, he stationed there Levites and priests: the priests would sound the trumpets, and the Levites would sing with the voice and with musical instruments. Now, as mentioned earlier, Heman had been chief; but now David established that Asaph should be chief, sounding the cymbals, in the place where the ark was set, while Heman remained chief at the great high place [bamah] in Gibeon, where the [sacrificial] service was performed, as is mentioned afterward. And here it records the wording of the song of thanksgiving that they used to offer in thanks to Hashem.
Metzudat David
'To minister' — to sweep and sprinkle water [to settle the dust] before the ark.
Malbim
'to minister' — to honor it and attend upon it; he also appointed Levites 'to celebrate' — meaning, to recount the deeds of Hashem in days of old 'and to thank' — for His goodness 'and praise' — by recounting His praises; and over this Asaph was the chief.

'and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests with trumpets continually, before the ark of the covenant of God' — in accordance with the law that priests sound the trumpets, and that two priests are required for this, as explained in [tractate] Arachin; and it appears that they themselves also sang with their mouths. to give thanks to the Lord by the hand of Asaph and his brethren Asaph would commence, “Give thanks to the Lord, call out in His name,” and afterwards all his brethren would respond after him. A similar instance is found in Ezra (Neh. 11:17): “And Mattaniah the son of Micha, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph the chief to begin the thanksgiving in prayer,” on the instrument of the huyedoth, as it is written in Ezra (ibid. 12:8): “And the Levites were Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, Mattaniah over the huyedoth.”

Rashi
'Make known His doings among the peoples' — the deeds of might and the wonders that He performed by means of the ark. 'Call upon His name' — cry out, "Hashem, help His ark!" — after the pattern of (I Kings 18), "and you shall call on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of Hashem." Concerning Hashem it is fitting to use the language of "calling," for He performed wonders.
Ralbag
'O give thanks to Hashem, call upon His name' - Give thanks to Hashem for the kindness and the faithfulness He has shown us; call out and tell of the wonders and the good things [He has done], in His name, to make known that they came to us from Him by way of [His] individual providence. Make known among the peoples His deeds, which He performed for us so wondrously; praise Him with songs and melodies, and speak in accounts of all His wonders, so that they may become known to all and people may be guided toward faith in Him.
Metzudat David
'O give thanks to Hashem' — meaning, and this was the song, [beginning] 'O give thanks to Hashem,' etc. 'Call upon His name' — with the name unique to Him alone, which points to His greatness. 'Make known' — proclaim among the peoples the wonders of His deeds.
Metzudat Zion
'His doings' — His deeds; the word is related to 'deal with them' (olel lamo) (Lamentations 1).
Malbim
'O give thanks to Hashem' — it is explained in Seder Olam that the first psalm, through verse 23, was recited in the morning, and the second psalm, from verse 23 onward, was recited in the evening. David composed the first psalm in his Book of Psalms as Psalm 105, and I explained it there in my own way; let the reader seek out my explanation there. Here, however, it appears with certain changes, for in this psalm the intent is to recall that Hashem promised the land to Abraham, and commanded the nations not to touch [His people] — that this word which He commanded stands firm for a thousand generations — for so He displayed His wonders in the field of the Philistines, [warning them] not to touch His holy ark and His people Israel. There (Psalms 105:6) it says, 'the seed of Abraham His servant,' since the promise was originally given to Abraham; but here it says 'the seed of Israel,' since His wonders concerning the ark came about specifically through Israel, the father of the nation. There (v. 8) it says 'He has remembered His covenant forever,' but here it says 'remember [it]' — commanding now that Israel remember His covenant and keep it. The other changes are to be understood in the same way.

Glory in His holy name saying that whoever believes in our God - He will help him. A similar instance is (Isa. 41:16): “... with the Holy One of Israel shall you praise yourself.” of His holy name that you have a holy God like our God, and so (Deut. 4:7): “... like the Lord our God whenever we call out to Him.” may the heart of those who seek the Lord rejoice and when he does good, the heart of he who seeks the Lord with a whole heart is able to rejoice. Therefore...

Search for the Lord and His might The Sanctuary and Ark are called “His might,” as it is written (Ps. 78:61): “And He delivered His might into captivity,” i.e., He delivered His Ark to bring it into captivity, and it is written (ibid. 132:8): “Arise, O Lord, to Your resting place, You and the Ark of Your might.” For that reason, Eleazar, its watchman, was called Uzza, because he guarded the Ark, which was called might (עֹז). An example of this is that [Ephron was called by this name] because of the four hundred silver shekels, which is the numerical value of the name Ephron. And so, many others [as in] (Gen. 49:16): “Dan (דָן) will champion (יָדִין) the right of his people”; (ibid. verse 8): “Judah, (יְהוּדָה) you are the one; to you your brothers do homage (יוֹדוּךָ).”
Ralbag
'Seek Hashem' - that His providence may cleave to you. 'And His strength' - seek it, that being the power He has to alter the order of nature; and this you will attain if you seek His presence continually, so as to cleave to Him. (12, 15) 'Remember' - this directs you to believe this: that you, the seed of Israel His servant, the children of Jacob who are Hashem's chosen ones, should remember His wonders that He performed, and His marvels, which were the judgments of His mouth - meaning, that He announced them before they came to pass, as in the matter of the plagues of Egypt; for this shows that these events were not mere chance that happened to befall them, but were wonders that Hashem performed with deliberate intention and will. He is Hashem our God, who guides us and watches over us, whose judgments are in all the earth, for everything is an effect of His wisdom, and His might, too, holds sway over all the earth to do whatever He wills, upon a nation and upon a person alike. (15, 20) 'Remember' - His covenant, which He maintains forever, between Him and the holy patriarchs, and the word which He commanded for many generations - a wondrous multitude that will never be exhausted. Now this covenant is the one He made with Abraham on Mount Moriah, and which Hashem swore to Isaac, and which Hashem established to Jacob as a statute and an everlasting covenant that shall not depart. And it says this because it has already been established from the words of the Torah that it can never happen, at any time, that the seed of Jacob should come to an end, nor even one of the tribes - as we explained in our commentary on the words of the Torah. And it says that this matter of the inheritance of the land Hashem commanded for a thousand generations, for Hashem did not wish to give Israel all the land that He had sworn to the patriarchs in the days of Moses and Joshua, but rather made them wait for the inheritance of the three remaining nations until the coming of the redeemer, so that this good would not depart from them thereafter - for then the kingship will belong to Israel forever and ever, as is made clear from the words of Daniel. And on account of the great length of this time, it says that it is for a thousand generations, by way of hyperbole and exaggeration. Now this covenant was to say: To you I will give the land of Canaan, the portion of your inheritance - when you were but a handful, few in number, and sojourners in the land, I promise you this, that to your seed I will give the land.
Metzudat David

Remember His wonders the plague of the mice, and they took milch cows and shut up their young in the house, and the cows went straight (I Sam. 6:10-12), and they did not turn back, and the breach of Uzza. The entire song was composed concerning the Ark, and they would say it for the daily sacrifice in the morning, and “Sing to the Lord,” for the daily sacrifice in the afternoon (Seder Olam ch. 14). 'Remember His covenant for ever, The word which He commanded to a thousand generations' — this is the Torah, which He had commanded to make known to the world after a thousand generations; but He saw that the world could not endure without the Torah, so He waived nine hundred and seventy-four of those generations, and now [Scripture] goes on to tell what that number actually came to.

'His covenant' — the Torah, which was given by way of a covenant. 'The word which He commanded' — and this is the word that He commanded to us after a thousand generations; for the Holy One, blessed be He, caused nine hundred seventy-four generations to pass out of the world without creating them, and it was only after twenty-six generations from the creation of the world that He gave the Torah — which comes to a thousand generations in all.

When you were few in number [It was] then that He swore to give them the land of Canaan, the portion of your heritage. And this is a great thing, so that they cannot say that because of your great numbers, you seized the land of Canaan, but when you were few in number. Now if you say that even a thousand or more have a number, what is this about which it is written: “When you were few in number”? Therefore, it says: “hardly dwelling in it.” The meaning is that if He would say to one settler, e.g., to Abraham alone, to Isaac alone, to Jacob alone, to one of them He would say, “To you I will give the land of Canaan,” it would not be a wonder, because they were settled in it! But He swore to give you the land at a time when your ancestors were strangers sojourning in it, as it is written (Gen. 35:27): “... that is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.” And furthermore, if He would say to a stranger who is settling, “To you and to your seed I will give this land,” it would not be such a wonder. Therefore, he says that they were not even strangers who were settling, but...

Rashi
And when they walked from nation to nation Abraham went to Egypt and to Gerar, and so did Isaac, and so was Jacob in Laban’s house for twenty years, and now, too, for it does not say: וַיֵּלְכוּ but וַיִּתְהַלְּכוּ (poraler in Old French, to wander about)
Ralbag
'And when they went about' - The patriarchs went about from nation to nation within the land of Canaan, and from one kingdom to another people - as happened to Abraham when there was a famine in the land, and to Isaac, and in general whenever they moved from place to place there.
Metzudat David
'And when they went about' — they did not settle in one place, but went about from one nation to another and from one kingdom to another; and it is the way of the local inhabitants to take advantage of a foreigner who comes to sojourn without a permanent home.

Rashi
He let no man oppress them Although they walked from place to place and it is customary to harm wayfarers, and when they arrive to their inn, they are falsely accused, but these the Holy One, blessed be He, did not let [anyone] hurt them or oppress them. An example is (Lev. 5:21): “or oppressed (עָשַּׁק) his neighbor.” Now if you ask if the reason that the highwaymen and [the people of] the other lands in whose midst they passed did not harm them was that they did not notice them, but if they had noticed them, they would have oppressed them, therefore, it says: “... and He reproved kings on their account,” i.e., they did oppress them, as Pharaoh [did] to Abraham and Abimelech to Isaac, and Laban and Shechem to Jacob, and the Holy One, blessed be He, said to them...
Ralbag
'He suffered no man to do them wrong' - Hashem, blessed be He, let no man wrong them, and for their sake He reproved kings; for Hashem struck Pharaoh and his household with great plagues over the matter of Sarai, the wife of Abram, and the same was true regarding Abimelech. For when Abimelech drove Isaac out of his kingdom, he did not, in the end, wrong him, and was afterward compelled to make a covenant with him. So, too, was the matter with Laban and Jacob: Hashem, blessed be He, did not let Laban wrong Jacob - for Hashem, blessed be He, was cautioning them all by way of a general charge, saying:
Metzudat David
'Indeed, for their sake He reproved kings' — for their sake He reproved, with affliction, the king of Egypt and the king of the Philistines, because they had taken Sarah (and Scripture says of them that it was for this reason that Abimelech was afraid to touch Rebecca).
Metzudat Zion
'To do them wrong' — an expression of oppression and robbery. 'He reproved' — an expression of repaying evil with punishment, as in 'and, O Rock, You have established him for chastisement' (lehochiach) (Habakkuk 1:12).

Rashi
Do not touch My anointed ones, and do not harm My prophets Concerning Abraham it says (Gen. 12:17): “And the Lord plagued Pharaoh,” and it is written (ibid. 20:3): “And the Lord came to Abimelech in a dream at night and said to him: You shall die, etc.” Concerning Jacob it says: (ibid. 31: 24): “And God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream at night, and said to him: Beware, etc.” And further, concerning Jacob, when they came to kill him because they killed Shechem and Hamor, it is writ ten: (ibid. 35:5): “Then they journeyed on, and the terror of God was, etc.” The Book of Psalms is more explicit, for the psalm does not terminate here, as it is written there (105:16): “He called a famine upon the land,” in order to exile them to Egypt.
Ralbag
'Touch not My anointed ones' - who are the Patriarchs, whom I have chosen. 'And do My prophets no harm' - for all the Patriarchs were prophets, as is made clear in the Torah.
Metzudat David
'Touch not' — through the affliction He brought upon them, it was as though He said, 'touch not,' etc.; and to Abimelech this was stated explicitly. 'My anointed ones' — meaning, My great and distinguished ones; similarly, 'to His anointed, to Cyrus' (Isaiah 45:1). 'And My prophets' — for the Patriarchs were prophets. 'Do no harm' — do not do them evil.

'Sing to Hashem, all the earth; proclaim His salvation' - which is continual, from day to day. Or perhaps the meaning is: let each of you report to another the salvation He performs from one day to the next, for His wonders and His salvations are continual, flowing from Him every day; for He is forever giving life to all things and sustaining them in the existence that is theirs.
Metzudat David
'Proclaim His salvation from day to day' — every day proclaim the salvation that is coming, for it will indeed come, day by day.
Metzudat Zion
'Proclaim' — an expression of telling news.
Malbim
'Sing to Hashem, all the earth' — this psalm is found in the Book of Psalms as Psalm 96, and I have already explained the psalm and its meaning in my commentary to the Book of Psalms. Here too there are certain changes suited to the subject of the ark, since the intent of the thanksgiving is for the sign and wonder that Hashem performed by means of the ark when the Philistines captured it, through which the nations recognized His wonders and realized that all the gods of the peoples are mere idols, for Dagon their god fell before the ark of Hashem. There (v. 6) it says 'strength and beauty are in His sanctuary,' but here it says 'strength and gladness are in His place,' for although the ark sat in the field of the Philistines, [Hashem] displayed His strength there and rejoiced over the downfall of His enemies. There it says (v. 8), 'bring an offering and come into His courts,' whereas here it says 'bring an offering and come before Him,' since here the sense is that Hashem dwells beside the ark, so that those who come, come before Him. In this same way you will be able to explain the other changes, once you study my commentary there and reflect on the matter.

'For Hashem' - He, blessed be He, is greater, more worthy of praise, and more awesome than all the separate intellects, for whatever power they possess is not their own but is from Hashem, blessed be He; nor do they have any power except to perform what Hashem, blessed be He, has ordained for them among their operations. Hashem, blessed be He, however, has dominion over all that He desires. Now it is possible that the word 'gods' [elohim] here also includes the gods of the peoples; and if that is not so, then the meaning would be as stated (verse 26), 'for all the gods of the peoples are things of nought' - that all the gods of the peoples are indeed things of nought. Or perhaps the statement 'for all the gods of the peoples are things of nought' refers back to what was said, 'declare among the nations' His glory - as if to say that on this account they will be readily guided to faith in Hashem, blessed be He, since what they worship are things of nought, made by human hands; whereas Hashem, blessed be He, was not only not made by human hands, but He made the very heavens, which themselves exert some influence over the affairs of man and of other things. This is why you find that Nebuchadnezzar and Darius, as soon as they saw the wonders of Hashem, blessed be He, said that there is no god who can deliver as He does, as is related in the Book of Daniel. Now, we do not accept interpreting 'and He is to be feared above all gods' to mean that He is more feared than all the things of nought, for that would contain no praise of Hashem, blessed be He.
Metzudat David
'Above all gods' — these are the heavenly ministers of the idolatrous nations.

For all the gods of the peoples are idols vanity, the handiwork of man; and a similar example is in the prophecy of Habakkuk (2:18): “What did a graven image avail that its maker has graven it... etc.” until “to make dumb idols?” but the Lord made the heavens Regarding the idols it is written: “to make,” but the Holy One, blessed be he, is the Maker of the heavens and the earth and all their host.

Rashi
There is beauty and majesty before Him; might and joy in His place But the idols are lying like dead; wherever they are placed they lie, because our God is the true God.
Ralbag
'Honor and majesty are before Him' - for His works are of the utmost beauty and majesty, as is clear to anyone who examines the natural world. 'Strength and gladness' - these are found at the level of Hashem, blessed be He, for He alone has the strength to do all that He desires, even to change the order of existence, and He alone possesses the ultimate gladness. For wondrous gladness lies in intellectual apprehension, and this is quite evident, since we take incomparably greater pleasure in a theoretical matter once we have grasped it than we do in the pleasures we derive from material things. This being so, it is clear that the ultimate gladness resides with Hashem, blessed be He - for the more honored an apprehension is, the greater the gladness it brings; and since the apprehension of Hashem, blessed be He, is incomparably more honored than the apprehension of anything else (as we explained in the fifth [book] of the Wars of Hashem, and in the first book of it as well), it has thus been made clear that true gladness resides in His place. This is why the Sages said, in the blessings for the bridegroom, that 'gladness dwells in His habitation' - to point out that these physical pleasures are not the sort in which a person ought to rejoice, but that true gladness is found at the level of Hashem, blessed be He; and therefore every person should strive to apprehend Him according to his capacity, and will attain gladness in proportion to the degree of his apprehension.
Metzudat David
'Honor and majesty' — the very foundation of honor and majesty is before Him.
Metzudat Zion
'And gladness' — an expression of joy.

Rashi
Ascribe to the Lord the glory of His name His name is אֲדֹנָי, and He is the Lord (אָדוֹן) of all. That is the meaning of “Ascribe to the Lord the glory of His name,” because like His name, so is His praise. bow down to the Lord in the beauty of holiness for so we said, “There is beauty and majesty before Him.”
Ralbag
'Ascribe to Hashem' the glory of His name, through what will become known to you of His wondrous works. 'Bring an offering,' a gift in honor of Hashem, 'and come before Him, and worship' Him in the place of His holy majesty - that is, the Temple; for there His holy matters stood at the very height of majesty and beauty, and this bears powerful witness to the wonders of the works of Hashem, blessed be He. This was so to some degree in the days of the Hasmoneans, but in the days of the Messianic King it will be so in full perfection, as will become clear from the words of the prophets.
Metzudat David
'The glory due to His name' — the glory that is fitting for His name. 'In the beauty' — in the tent of the ark, which is made beautiful through holiness.

Quake before Him, all the earth; also the inhabited world will be established so that it will not falter When a flesh and blood king sees that [the people] are worried and frightened of him, he casts more fear upon them, and they become more worried about him, lest he destroy all their homes, but the attribute of the Holy One, blessed be He, is that He does not do so. When the [inhabitants of] the world fear Him, then the world is established so that it does not falter. He wreaks vengeance upon robbers, and honest people remain in existence, and the earth remains in existence and does not falter. Therefore, “quake before Him, all the earth,” but do not worry because the Holy One, blessed be He, will come only to rectify the world. But when the creatures do not fear Him and they sin, then He will turn them over and destroy them.
Ralbag
'Tremble before Him,' all the earth - on account of the greatness of the wonders they will see. 'The world also is established' in belief in Him and shall never be moved from it; for then Hashem, blessed be He, will turn to the peoples a pure language, so that all of them will call upon the name of Hashem and serve Him with one accord. And once the true faith has spread through the entire world, it will no longer be dislodged, at any time whatsoever.
Metzudat David
'All the earth' — the inhabitants of the earth. 'The world also is established' — meaning, you too, O world, stand firm on your base and foundation, and do not sway toward falling, for all the days that God has decreed for you to stand in your place.

'Tremble' — an expression of trembling and shuddering. 'Be moved' — an expression of tilting, of swaying.

The heavens will rejoice and the earth will exult, and they will say among the nations, “The Lord has reigned” When a flesh and blood [monarch] reigns, all are sad, because they do not know whether he will judge harshly, but when the Holy One, blessed be He, will reign, the heavens and earth will rejoice, and all the upright will say, “Now the Lord has reigned,” for He has restored the Ark to us.
Ralbag
'Let the heavens be glad' - Scripture speaks here by way of figure, [saying] that then the heavens will be glad and the earth will rejoice over what has come to be within it through the existence of mankind, because then the purpose for which man was created will at last be achieved. It is as though, until then, the heavens and the earth were troubled that the creatures brought into being through them were not attaining the purpose intended for them, so that, from this perspective, their workings were, as it were, in vain and for nothing. 'And let them say among the nations, Hashem reigns' - for then all will recognize His kingship and His dominion.
Metzudat David
'Let the heavens be glad,' etc. — meaning, when the time comes that His kingship will be revealed, the hosts of heaven and the inhabitants of the earth will rejoice. 'Hashem reigns' means, His kingship has been revealed.

The sea and the fullness thereof will roar all the creatures in the sea. A similar example is (Isa. 44:23): “Sing, ye heavens, for the Lord has done this,” because He restored the Ark to us and sent destructive angels to execute justice upon the Philistines.
Ralbag
'The sea' - Scripture states, by way of figure, that even the sea and its fullness - meaning the creatures within it that were created for man's use - and the grasses of the field and the trees of the forest, will all be glad and shout for joy in praise of Hashem, blessed be He, when He comes to judge the earth and to show the nations His wonders and His mighty acts, for then all will recognize Him. And David concludes the passage by saying (verse 34), 'Give thanks to Hashem, for He is good' - for nothing but good things flow from Him, and when evils do flow from Him, this occurs only incidentally, the flow from Him being, in what it fundamentally is, good. 'For His kindness endures forever' - meaning, the good He bestows by way of specific providence, as we noted regarding the covenant with the Patriarchs; and also, what He provides by way of general, all-encompassing providence contains within it an unceasing kindness beyond all reckoning.

Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, for His loving-kindness exists forever This verse (34) is not a conclusion of the Psalm (96) but [a continuation] of Psalm (105): “Give thanks to the Lord, call out in His Name.” The verse (35): “And say, save us, etc.” is from the Psalm (106). And this Psalm (106) commences with this verse (in Chron.). Now is it appropriate here, “And say, etc. and save us from the nations,” for when were they exiled in David’s time, that he should say, “and save us from among the nations”? And this is the arrangement in Psalms. Psalm (105) commences: “Give thanks to the Lord, call out in His name,” and it concludes only with “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, etc.” until “Amen! Hallelujah,” for it is all one topic, but because it is a long psalm, it was divided, and it commences, “Give thanks to the Lord for He is good.” Similarly, Job, when he had to lengthen his reply, he shortened it and divided it in two, and it says, (Job 29:1): “And Job again took up his parable,” for in song, because of his ecstasies of joy, he could not speak at length; so he divided it in two. And so, in the matter of lamentation, because of his intense pain he could not speak at length, and he divided it in two, because both song and lamentation are uttered similarly. When Hannah came to pray in the forecourt, Eli thought her to be a drunken woman, because he thought that she acted in that manner because of wine, but she said, (I Sam. 1:15f.): “... and neither new wine nor old wine have I drunk, etc., for out of the abundance of my complaint and my vexation....” From here we learn that drunken people and those suffering from pain behave in the same manner.
Metzudat David
'For He is good' — for Hashem is good to all, and He does kindness forever.
Malbim
'O give thanks to Hashem; for He is good; For His mercy endures for ever' — this verse serves as a marker for the beginning of Psalm 106, and the verse following it [corresponds to] the end of that psalm — to the point that, in my view, they would recite the whole of Psalm 105 in the morning and the whole of Psalm 106 in the evening. Or perhaps they recited only the beginning and end of the psalm as an allusion to that psalm and its content: for Psalm 105 tells of the kindnesses that Hashem performed for Israel when they left Egypt and in the wilderness, while Psalm 106 tells how they rebelled against His words and were ruled over by their enemies, so that they went into captivity before the foe, concluding with the plea that He gather them from the nations among whom they had gone captive; and all the people responded, 'Blessed be Hashem, God of Israel' — to bless Him for both the good and the bad. Now in Psalms the word 'and say' does not appear, only 'save us'; this implies that here it is a command to the people, that they themselves recite these last two verses. See what Rashi writes on this.

And say, “Save us At the end of the Psalm (106:42), which speaks about captivity: “And their foes oppressed them, and they were humbled under their hand,” it is written thereafter, (ibid. verse 46): “And He caused them to be pitied by their captors.” Now, it is appropriate to say, “Save us, O Lord our God, and gather us from the nations,” as You have done to them. In Psalms, it does not say, “And say, save us” but only, “Save us,” because that is the appropriate wording. For the following reason, David recited these two psalms when he brought the Ark: It is explained in Genesis Rabbah (54:4): “since the cows, when they sang, recited these two psalms.” Rabbi Samuel the son of Nahmani said: (I Sam. 6:12): ‘And the cows sang.’ What song did they sing? ‘Give thanks to the Lord, call out in His name.’ Rabbi Eleazar says: ‘Sing to the Lord, all the earth, etc.’” Therefore, David instituted them to recite them before the Ark, one psalm in the morning and one psalm in the evening. Quoted from Rabbi Eleazar the son of Meshullam of blessed memory.
Ralbag
'Save us' — Here too the psalm prophesies about the time when Israel would be in exile, saying: 'Save us, God of our salvation, and gather us and deliver us from the nations,' so that we may give thanks to Your holy name and glory in Your praise — [this to happen] when You set the people who cling to You upon their inheritance, as You promised in the words of the Torah, and afterward through Your servants the prophets. After this song the Levites would say (verse 36), 'Blessed is Hashem, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting,' and all the people would say 'Amen' and praise Hashem. It appears that the people's response resembled what we noted in the Book of Ezra (Nehemiah 9:5), where it says that they used to say: 'Blessed is Hashem our God, from everlasting to everlasting; and blessed be His glorious name, exalted above all blessing and praise.' And it goes on to say, that already—
Metzudat David
'And say you' — David told them: pray to Hashem on behalf of the future exiles who would come at the end of days, and say on their behalf, 'save us,' for You have from of old been the God of our salvation. 'That we may give thanks,' etc. — for the salvation that is coming, to glory in Your praise; that is, to praise ourselves through Your praise, for it is counted as praiseworthy to cling to Hashem, who is exceedingly praised.

to serve before the Ark continually with song. as every day’s work required evening and morning.
Ralbag
'So he left there… Asaph and his brethren' — David left them there to minister before the ark continually with song, doing each day's service as it required.
Metzudat David
'Asaph' — that is, Asaph himself. 'To minister' — in the matter of song. 'As every day's work required' — the song fitting for each day, they would sing on its own day.
Metzudat Zion
'As every day's work required' — an expression meaning each and every day.
Malbim
'So he left there, before the ark of the covenant of Hashem, Asaph and his brethren' — he left the order of the service to Asaph, [it being his task] to arrange the song that must be recited continually, according to the day's needs.

And Obed-Edom and his brethren [they] were left with Asaph to sing. and Obed-Edom the son of Jeduthun and Hosah [they] were left as gate sentries for the Ark.
Ralbag
Now, Obed-edom and his brethren were sixty-eight; and Obed-edom, and Hosah the son of Jeduthun, David appointed as gatekeepers at the tent where David had placed the ark of Hashem. Here the text breaks off, and then it continues:
Metzudat David
'To be door-keepers' — to serve as guards of the gates of the tent of the ark.
Malbim
'and Obed-edom with their brethren, threescore and eight' — Radak explains: his [Obed-edom's] sons and brethren numbered sixty-eight; yet below (26:8) they are counted as sixty-two, and it must be said that six of them were lost in the plague that occurred at that time. Alternatively, [Radak] explains that Obed-edom and Hosah, together with their brethren, numbered sixty-eight, meaning that Obed-edom and Hosah were the ones specifically appointed as gatekeepers. And although below (ibid., v. 10) thirteen sons are counted for Hosah, by that later time their numbers had increased.

And Zadok the priest was the head, and his brethren, the priests with him, David stationed before the Tabernacle of the Lord, which was in Gibeon, and he did not leave any priest with the Ark, because they did not have to perform the sacrificial service
Ralbag
David arranged for Zadok the priest, and his brethren the priests, to serve before the Tabernacle of Hashem, at the great high place that was in Gibeon.
Metzudat David
'Before the tabernacle' — they served before the tabernacle. 'In the high place' — at the altar that stood in Gibeon.

'and Zadok the priest, and his brethren the priests' — what Rashi writes, that [David] left no priest at all with the ark, is not to be taken precisely, as noted [by Malbim] on verse 6.

Ralbag
Now, together with Asaph and his brethren mentioned above were Heman and Jeduthun, and the rest of those chosen for the singing, who were specified by name earlier, to give thanks to Hashem, because His mercy endures forever. It appears that Heman and Jeduthun sang with their voices, and that instruments of music were with them, while the sons of Jeduthun served as gatekeepers, as was mentioned just above.
Metzudat David
'Who,' etc. — whom Scripture spelled out by name, listing exactly who would stand before the tabernacle. 'Because His mercy endures for ever' — and it is fitting to give Him thanks for this.
Metzudat Zion
'Who were chosen' — [meaning] the selected ones. 'Who were mentioned by name' — [meaning] were specified, as in 'and he who blasphemes' (venokev) 'the Name' (Leviticus 24).
Malbim
'and with them Heman' — meaning that Heman and Jeduthun were among those who sang with their voice; that is why it says they were 'with them,' namely, with the priests. 'and the rest who were chosen' — that is, the ones selected who were then designated by name to give thanks to Hashem with their voice; and Heman and Jeduthun were also with them, to play on trumpets, cymbals, and other musical instruments, for they were skilled both in vocal singing and in instrumental music. 'and the sons of Jeduthun' — were designated for the gate.

'And David returned' — from before the tent of the ark. 'To bless his house' — in the same manner that he had blessed the people in the name of Hashem.
Malbim
'And all the people departed' — after David had arranged the service of the ark and the Tabernacle, and the watches of the priests and Levites, each in his own place, then the people went to their homes, and David turned to bless his household. [Ezra] makes no mention here of Michal the daughter of Saul, since that has already been stated there in Samuel.
