Matot
Numbers 30:2 – 32:42
Matot opens with the laws of vows and oaths, emphasizing that a person's word is binding — 'he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that comes out of his mouth.' God commands Israel to take vengeance on Midian for the seduction at Baal-Peor; the war is fought and the spoils divided according to precise rules. The tribes of Reuben and Gad, seeing the rich pasturelands east of the Jordan, request to settle there. Moses initially rebukes them, fearing a repeat of the spies' sin, but agrees on the condition that they lead the military crossing into the Land of Israel before returning to their territory.
